My LAVH was Thursday at 0730--first one of the day. I had to be there at 0500 (yuck). Hubby waited while I went back. It was my first surgery ever and I made sure the anestesiologist and nurses new that. They were wonderful! They took me to the OR and I slid onto the table. I remember the doc saying he was going to give me a little oxygen and when I opened my eyes again, I was in recovery. They had already removed my catheter as well (wasn't expecting that, but it was nice). The recovery nurse said they would be taking me to my room shortly and all the sudden I was in my bed and DH was with me again. I asked for some pain medicine and the nurse brought it right out. I didn't have a pain pump, just percoset. I was in my room around 1000. They let me have some juice for lunch and I had a regular dinner, but didn't eat much. I got up several times to go to the bathroom. It wasn't bad (just pee'ed), but it took forever to feel like I had gotten all of it out. I had an IV for the first day and had some antibiotics (standard procecure I think). I spent the day sleeping, walking, or watching tv. Either my DH or MIL stayed with me the first day. DH left in the evening to get the kids settled and he came back Friday morning. Didn't get a lot of sleep in the castle, but was expecting that. It was difficult to get comfortable. Friday was more walking and I got released around 3:15--home by 3:30.

I wore their gown the entire time. I never worried about panties (though I brought some). It felt more comfortable to "go commando." I was able to wear my regular size bikini panties home. They sit under my incisions so don't bother them at all. My lounge pants sit right at my top incision though so I ended up wearing them as low-riders to keep from pressing on it.

I have always had heavy periods and bad cramping. BCPs helped a lot but this past year they didn't work much at all. My regular doc did an ultrasound and said I had several fibroids. She sent me to a gyn doc. The gyn doc did another ultrasound and confirmed the fibroids. We discussed having an ablation vs hysterectomy. She felt that with the number of fibroids I had, the size of several of them, and the fact that I was still having heavy bleeding/clotting even though I was taking 2 BCPs daily, that the ablation was only buying me time. I told her that I didn't want to have to keep addressing this every few months and opted for the hysterectomy. I didn't feel that nervous until I went to pre-op (2 days before surgery). Then I felt like I was going to lose it. I discovered Hyster-Sisters while searching for info on hysterectomies. This site has been wonderful! It answered so many questions and let me know I wasn't alone. It also let me know I was normal.

I was able to keep the ovaries. The doc said they looked "beautiful." She has pictures in my file and said she show me them next week. I go in Tuesday to get my stitches out. Little sore, but have managed it today with Motrin. Walking helps. Not looking forward to the first BM but hope it comes soon!

DH, DD, and DS are wonderful help. Little mini-meltdown this evening from the kids, but I think they were releasing a little stress from the week. Just taking it easy, resting, and enjoying recovery.
