Abdominal Hysterectomy: SAH - My Story

I was diagnosed with a 5 cm. fibroid in Feb. '07. I didn't feel any discomfort, so just decided to "wait and see." The doctor saw me Sept. '07, the fibroid only grew 1 cm. to 6 cm. But I was starting to feel it. It was starting to negatively impact my life. I started to feel pressure on my bladder. Sex was starting to become difficult. Life was starting to get uncomfortable in most aspects, and I was becoming a very tired cranky woman. After a painful period on Sept. 14, I called and said "I want this out!" The next two months became increasingly painful with each passing day. We scheduled a SAH for Nov. 14, 2007. And the waiting was the worst part. The tests, IVP- having to fast and take Fleet laxative, all of that, inlcuding the two days before surgery of sheer terror. I had 3 kids- all vaginal births. So I was extremely terrified of being "cut open." I must say that except for the first day in the hospital and the terrible gas pains on days 2 and 3, it really hasn't been all that terrible. Much less painful than I ever imagined it would be. I returned home to a very supportive hubby who handled everything for the next 9 days. I am now 14 days post op, back to driving, cooking, laundry, and life hasn't been this good in quite some time. No more pressure on my inner organs, no more constant trips to relieve my bladder, no more back pain. Life is just going to get better with each passing day. And I hope that by 6 weeks, sex won't be so painful. (My fibroid was 9 cm. by the time it was removed. May explain why sex wasn't all that much fun towards the end?!).
Anyway, best of luck to all you ladies in waiting. The waiting really is the hardest part. Once you come out of the recovery room, you'll feel like your life is just beginning. Just remember, if you are extremely nervous in the holding room right before your surgery, let them give you a sedative. It relaxed me almost immediately, and by the time I was wheeled into the surgery room, I was so at peace, I really don't remember much more than seeing my doctor and the nurses, and then drifting off the a very pleasant sleep. Best of luck to all of you. This website is awesome and a great support for pre-or post-ops. God bless!
