My hysterectomy seemed to go quickly from start to finish. It started with pains and two trips to the emergency room, and ended with the best Christmas gift I could ever give myself.
In March of 2007, I went to the ER with severe pains on my right side. They thought it was appendicitis, and began treating me as such. Well, all X-rays and cat scans, ultrasounds and overnight observation done with I was sent home with a shrug. Before I went home, however, they told me that I had a cyst on my left overy and the pain must have been one on the right bursting.
Okay...so fast forward 3 months. I go see my Dr (again) because of pain in my right side (again), he orders a colonoscopy..."let's find out if it's IBS". I do my lovely prep for the procedure, have it done...and what do ya know...nothing wrong!
Three more months go by...WHAM!!!! Pain again on the right side. Back to the ER. More ultrasounds, more blood work, more X-rays...more stay in the hospital. This time though they tell me, "let's do a laporscopic and see what we can see." Finally they find many cysts, two chocolate cysts, and endo. I go to my GP after the tests came back and he explains that I'll have to have more surgery to fight the endo and cysts. I say "UH-UH! If they are going back in, they are taking the @#$@ thing!" LOL
I'm refered to a gyno and we begin the process. Amazing thing, is that it only took three weeks to go from, "this is what you have"...to..."surgery time!"
I get to the hospial on December 4 at 8:00am. Doctor decided to do a total hysterectomy and take everything, including my cervix. By now, I am so ready to have my uterus out, I'm about to take it out myself! hehe... I get to my room about 8:20 and they tell me, "everything off, but your smile!" I put on the gown...it wasn't a regular gown, however. It was called a hugger gown. It had a hose that attached to it, that blew hot air into the gown onto me. Wish I could have brought it home! LOL! Anyway...they start putting the IV in me (took 5 times before they got it). Then I got to sit and wait. After about an hour my "ride" came for me and I was off to the O.R. Gotta say, my anesthetist (sp) was wonderful. He asked me where I wanted to go. I told him Hawaii. When he put the drug in to put me to sleep, he told me, "well in 20 seconds you'll be sitting on the beach sipping mixed drinks." I remember smiling and saying, "cool!" Next thing I know, I'm waking up in recovery. Only spent about an hour there before I was sent to my room.
My first night in my room, though was a bit scary. I had a reaction to something they had given me and had to be treated for it. That night...I remember NOTHING! After that, it was so easy. The nurses had me walking the next day and I was off my cath. that next day, as well.
I stayed in the hospital for two days, then was released. I am so happy to be home mending now. Pain really isn't an issue with me. Just being extra tired. I've also noticed that some chronic back pain that I had before my hysterectomy is GONE! I'm so thrilled! This was the best thing I have ever done for myself.
