On July 20, 2001 at 7:30 am, I had a TAH BSO for fibroid tumors. I chose to have an epidural. They gave me a sedative through surgery to keep me out until about 15 minutes to go. When I woke up and they asked me how I felt, I responded "that was the best nap I've ever had". It went very well and I was up walking at 1:30 pm that same day. My Dr. was amazed, but I have been very active in Tae Kwon Do for 10 years and I do believe the exercise and mental conditioning really helped me. I was released the next day at 11:30. Hard to get any rest in the hospital anyway. The bad thing on the epidural is that one side effect is itchiness and that is very correct, about drove me crazy for a day and a half. I went home and took it easy. My sister flew in to spend the week assisting me along with my husband and grown son. My worse times were at night, getting in and out of bed and restlessness. I found that sleeping in my lazyboy chair allowed me more holders to pull up on and to help assist me as I got back in to really help. I also found that our deck outside was good to go to at ground level and sit up two steps and use the reinforced end boards to do the same as the lazyboy. Today is Wednesday and I have noticed the biggest difference in sitting down and getting up pains with little pain medicine, but try to take something for inflammation. I tried not to dwell on the surgery, but keep thinking that I will be in the hands of professionals doing this everyday. I do believe a positive attitude toward this really helps. My optimistic expectations on recovery have been thus far been exceeded, but I have know several women recently that have had the same, but not the same results as quickly as I had. As most of the information will tell you, you may or may not recover fast, but I can tell you whenever you do start to get to feeling better, it just keeps getting better, and don't let that fool you into doing what you know you should not. I myself, don't want to do anything to upset this cycle. Hope all of you getting ready to have the same will have similar stories to share with the rest of us women.
