OK, since I believe you can never read enough information, and since my experience has been so postive. Here is my story.

TAH scheduled for 7/25 at 8:30. Arrived nervous, but calm, at 7 am. Taken back to pre-op where I put on the wonderful dressing gown and answered all the questions, I had already answered at pre-op lab day and over the phone. Oh well, You can never have enough information. Nurse comes to put in my IV, and I warn her that I am difficult to find veins on. She gets it in, but it proves to be a problem later..... Now I wait , and wait for the fun drugs to relax me....after all I have the IV! finally at 8:15 the anthesiologist shows up with the wonder drug and I am wisked off to surgery. Climb up on a skinny! operating table and try to center/ balance myself. This should be fun. I suddenly have faces staring at me from all angels, nurse anesthist, anesthesiologist, , 3rd year resident, 1st year- resident. I say ' geez an audience" to chuckles all around, and then off to la-la land.

Wake up in recovery room with 2 other women already there and 4 more to come in while I am there.... all of us hyster sisters! Nurse says to remember to breathe deeply and slowly to clear out the fuzzy feeling, and the sooner I can answer questions co-herently, the faster I get to a room. She asks me to rate the pain and I give it a 7-8. "OK you need morphine then".. 'You think" Once the pump is hooked up, I am watching the clock to see when every 6 minutes passes so I can push the pump! After about 20 minutes, I think this is OK. I have been really concentrating on slow steady breathing and I am the first one released from recovery. When we get in the hallway, my transport person said, they only had 1 private room, and we all wanted one, so the first person out, got it! Thanks to my nurse for her breathing advice!

I am in my room by 12:30 and really more comfortable than I thought I would be. The morphine is working and I am dozzy. My sister, mom and aunt come to check on me and they think I am sleeping. I can hear there whole conversation, but the effort of opening my eyes and joining in, is more than I can manage.

Dinner of broth and orange sherbert. The orange sherbert is heaven on earth! No sleep that night, with the every 2 hour checks, the noise, etc..... I know that earlier in the day they seemed concerned with the very little urine output from the catheter. Well that changed around midnight! The nurse came in to a very full foley bag that had hit its limit and flowed on the floor......

Words to the wise. I am very fair skinned and was having problems with the morphine PCA pump. Everytime I would hit it, I would get a very strong burning pain in my hand and arm. The nurse checked and felt like the IV wasn't in very well and should probably be changed. We talked about it and I really didn't want to go through that. She suggested I switch to Percocet, but I was unwilling to let go of the control the PCA gave me. I just pushed the pump a lot less than I really needed to. When I finally switched to the Percocet the next day, I found better pain control from them. Oh well live and learn.

Doctor stopped by that morning with discharge instructions and prescription pad. I am told once I start passing gas, I can head home. Easier said than done! By 5 pm, I was miserable. Swollen, painful and frustrated. I walked down to the nurses station to as for help. My nurse suggested a suppository, and was willing to do anything. She brought it down to my room and said that if it was going to work, I would know in an hour. If it didn't work, they would have to keep me overnight. I want to go home! Luckily it did kick in and give me enough relief that I checked out at 8:30 that night. Home to the couch, where I have been since.

Pain is being controlled with Advil during the day and 1 percocet at night. I am amazed at the total lack of energy I have, and laugh, when a shower, or unloading the dishwasher, requires an hour nap!

But just think no more TAMPONS!!!!!!!!

And prior to surgery I had purchased something I had never owned before....

A pair of WHITE PANTS!!!!

Can't wait to wear them.

Love to all,
