Abdominal Hysterectomy - You know it's time when....

You start planning your life around your pain, you wear a pad just in case, you have at least 2 extra heating pads as back up, you never run out of Advil, and your doc's # is on your speed dial.

I have been post op 7 days now, and the pain I have now is NOTHING compared to what I had even 4 hours before the hysterectomy. I had 2 large cyste removed from my ovaries in 06, for heavy bleeding, and cramps. By June of 06, bleeding was back, not alot, but enough to wear a pad EVERDAY. He did an ednometrial biopsy....clear, he then suggested an ablation which would end all menses. Sounded good to me. THis was done 10/06, drained for about 6 weeks, no period from 10/06-6/08. HOWEVER, in November of 07, I started to feel like I was always ready to get my period, cramping, back ache. Sooooo, back to the doctor, ultra sounds were done, and cysts were back, and fibroids (although they were there before, but now decided they wanted to known). We opted for a wait and see. By April 08 the cysts began rupturing, back was constantly aching and the "H" word starting floating around. Well, after 6 1/2 weeks and ER visits for the rupturing I decided hysterectomy had to be the answer. So, I sat in his office and my first words to him when he came in were, "I can't do this anymore". The pain was now running my life, and had control of my life, I needed to be in control again. So it was scheduled for 6/18. It was decided that removal of both ovaries, tubes, uterus and of course fibroids, and leaving the cervix was the way to go, although he tried laprascopic, the fibriods were to big and he had to switch to an abdominal. 6 days pre op and as of right now, back pain is gone, feeling like I am getting my period is gone, I feel OK, except for stitiches and staples pulling, (they are being removed (ouch) on Thursday. I sit and wait for the "personal summer" to begin, but so far, I'm OK. As of today, I feel it was the best decision I've made, and hope it remains just that. This site, although I was a visitor for 3 weeks before my surgery, and didn;t register until after I was home from the hospital answered so many of the questions that would pop up in my mind at 2 and 3 in the morning. Thank you hystersisters, although I was a silent visitor for weeks, I now have a name, and hope I can help anyone who needs it.
