I suffered from growing fibroids for over 10 years, participated in a study for a medication to shrink fibroids, which had side effects and was not effective. Discovered LSH 2 yrs ago by simple accident- my gyn said he never told women about this alternative hyster procedure because he did not perform it himself. I found a dr in NJ & he was able to perform LSH even though my fibroids were huge, weighing almost 1 lb. I had become frantic in trying to deal with my condition without agreeing to a traditional hyster, which 3 diff drs had argued I do- I could not believe that LSH would be everything this dr said it would- but I walked out of the hospital after an overnight stay -even though a fibroid had wrapped itself around my bladder, and the dr had peeled it off and put in a temp catheter to rest the bladder- I walked out-wouldnt wait for a wheelchair- and 6 days later drove myself 90 miles to the dr to remove the catheter-I took a percocet the first 2 nights at home but the pain was just soreness, I had tiny punctures held together with crazy glue and 1 stitch, I was up and around immediately- 2 yrs later and I am still wildly ecstatic that this procedure was so wonderful. After inquiring of several drs afterward, I do not understand why so many drs will not advise patients about this option. Just imagine the dramatic percentage of fibroid patients who would not have to undergo a trad. hyst. with all of its problems and side effects, pain and recovery time. Noone will tell me why drs will not even tell women about this option and I do not want to come to the conclusion that it is simply greed, that drs do not want to lose the money from trad hysterectomies that almost all gyns perform--LSH involves commitment and intense training, and not many drs , I suspect, are even capable of it. I wish there were some way of letting women know about this option. I believe it is morally inexcusable and most likely unethical for drs not to at least offer women the information that this alternative exists.
