Ask A Doctor
Hiya all (long, but covers lots of stuff, fibro, problems with nurses, tales and other stuff of warning for the independent fibromites!)
I'm back, although was let out last week, fibromyalgia got a hold, had to have emergency Dr out the day after cause got an infection in the sinus that was causing asthma problems and risked chest infection, Dr that came out was pleased I had called him out, before my coughing (which was agony) got too bad and a risk to my insides. Cause being in K Monday was bank holiday so would have had to go 4 days with the risk of a chest infection setting in. Thankfully they started to work and the cough went very quickly over the weekend as did the pressure of infected sinuses (they did look at me at hospital, but they had given me a nebuliser BEFORE they checked me over and I had coughed up the rubbish in my upper lungs that had drained over night and caused me to have breathing/asthma problems! so they declared me ok.
Anyway my own GP has increased my pain meds, I have Bruphenorpine Patches 52ug/h already and even placed as close as dare to wounds without touching wasn't enough, so got some 'stick under the tongue to dissolve' Bruphenorpine tablets 1 every 8 hours, which are wonderful for 5 1/2 hours, then they start to wear off quite quickly and can even feel the increase of the fibro pains, I look up at the clock as the pains increase and think, oh drat 2 hours yet.
I will say one thing for other fibromyalgia sufferers, I have fibromyalgia badly and lots of other things, but surgery went well (no blood loss) and they said they would follow the list for fibromyalgia patients having an op (which is on hystersister site). which helped me.
with having IBS and irritable bladder too (including a lack of proper flow when started, its stops and starts and slow to start, I don't get the 'normal feeling of needing to go, since accident 7 years ago), they didn't leave a catheter in me after surgery, probably cause of the need for me to get peeing normally again, however long it took me, my first proper pee was some hours after returning to my ward, on a commode as I couldn't pee into one of those pans, the pain was too much and not only that with my bladder problems I was in the wrong position to pee, they were impressed I had done over 300mls, I get heart burn like feeling when full/bursting, not normal feeling anyway, but not all Fibromites have bladder problems to this extent.
although cause our muscles will be bruised, even with the pain meds and op jabs, it might be odd trying to pee the first few times and painful for a while afterwards.
Don't be frightened of asking for a suppository at night, when they are quieter and less people requiring the loo after you, for me it got rid of a load of wind, enough I swear to fill a child's large party balloon!, in the morning early i had to get up and finally went, although only way can go now is bent forward, the standard way nothing happens other than blocking me up (probably due to the damage the cervix had caused being stuffed into the lower back wall of my vagina and pressing into my bowel, now its not their, but a pocket is, which isn't when i bend forward, have to see if this gets better in time or if its bent forward to go from now on, at least i Can go, as the wind was not pleasent and I got moving the day after my op, only a bit to the loo and back.
I had a red tag with my allergies on which include alcohol based wipes, when a nurse came to do an ECG (think it was something she hadn't done that often, as she struggled to remember where stuff went) instead of using my wipes, unbeknown to me at first used the hospitals alcohol based ones and then wondered why my skin reacted, poured with oils and the patches fell off, had a go when realised and she wiped me over with one wipe, when she had gone, had to wipe myself over again, as was still itching.
Also cause one nurse mis heard me saying that I had moved my bowels that morning and wrote down i hadn't and stopped my co-codamol (which works a bit more than paracetamol, but then oramorph (oral morphine) doesn't work any better than co-codamol (hence why I rang my GP and got on more Bruphenorpine which IS working, not totally, cause of the fibromyalgia, but I would say I'm getting about 40-50% at best when they are working fully, cause the nurse didn't hear me say I HAD finally had a BM, she stopped my co-codamol and dropped to the 'for me' useless paracetamol. When I got a dose of paracetamol I asked the next shift nurse why she was only offering me that and she said, caue you have yet to have a BM. I said I had one early that morning and had had a suppository in the night too. so she had to get permission to change me back to the stuff that helped a bit, as paracetamol was as useless as having a tiny sip of water to kill a raging thirst!
But some of the nurses were very good, one told me a sad story of one lady that had had to come back into hospital because her selfish husband had forced her into having sex 2 weeks after her hysterectomy and didn't care if he hurt her of not he told her, he wanted his married rights. I told her that my hubby wouldn't even suggest it until i told him i had been given the all clear, thankfully got a hubby that is considerate and understanding (most times).
But although my fibro pains are not to bad with the meds and my outside wounds are healing nicely, got to remember my insides are not so well healed, so I'm bored, so much would like to do!! LOL
So for those of you with fibromyalgia, that live with the pain of fibro and get on with life despite your pain, don't try to manage the op pains in the same way, these pains have a very good reason as to why you hurt and yes although your Fibromyalgia will make them feel more painful, they are not fibromyalgia caused pains, they are op caused pains and you need to still take it easy and not try to 'just get on with stuff' cause Fibromyalgia or not a hysterectomy is a big op and we got to remember that as fibromyalgia sufferers we often grin and bare the pains it causes, but we can't try to grin and bare our op pains, we got to rest up, even if it means our fibro fitness level will drop and raise our fibro pains in time, you won't thank yourself if you increase your op healing time to 4-6 months and maybe need more surgery to repair anything.
my district nurse visited me to check the outside wounds and told my hubby and me that i should not be lifting anything more than a cup or knife and fork weight wise for at least 6 weeks!! so I'm having to remind myself that my belly pains are not those fibromyalgia belly pains 9or even just period like pains) they are pains from major surgery and i can't grin and bare then and get on with housework or looking after the pets properly. so fibromites be warned, we can't fight through these pains to get on with life, we got to rest up and be dependant for once in our lifes!!
Take care all and for all those waiting for your op, best of luck, well that's it, one big email I'm off to bed again before I start to get uncomfortable again.
Hugs everyone for their support and help in the running up to my op.
Crystal
