While i am sure my story is NOT different or "better" than anyone else's< I feel that it is unique and absolutely CANNOT believe that I waited so long to have a hyst.

Let us travel back nearly 14 years....I was 18, married for 1 year and diagnosed with PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease). Doc claimed that my chances of conceiving were low......My son was born 10 months later. Fast forward 3 years to my next pregnancy which consisted of 6 months bedrest and placenta previa. After delivery a healthy baby girl, new doc wanted to find out why I had all the problems. He found TONS of endo and scar tissue on my uterine walls. Having more children was ruled out and we discussed my treatment options. I was only 22. I went through 4 laser-laperoscopies, 4 years on Depo-Provera and intermittant treatment with birth control pills and pain meds. The use of anti-inflammatory meds caused an ulcer that also needed to be treated. Needless to say, lide was NOT good.

Then in October 1999 I had the most horrible pain to date. I was admitted to the hospital after complaining for 2 weeks and surgery was performed 3 days later. I had a HUGE cyst on my right ovary (softball size) that the doc had drained. I took a week off from school (I'm a college student now) and then life continued until February when the pain returned. This time I spent 4 weeks on my back. I could not sit, stand or walk without pain. We knew it was another cyst but were waiting for it to dissolve without surgery. Finally I said I'd had enough and the doc took out the softball sized cyst as well as my right ovary. I lived the most normal life for the next 9 months.

In December 2000 I began to have heavy periods that we're growing closer together each month. By April 2001 they were nearly every 2 weeks and would last 6-8 days. Doc feared uterine cancer and put me on meds to stop the bleeding. I had a D&C in July that stopped my bleeding, put now I had pain instead. I spent the next 3 weeks in bed BEGGING for a hyst. My requests were finally granted on August 4th, but not without drama.

My doc's office called on August 3rd at 9am to tell me that surgery was on for the next morning at 9:15. I received all of my orders and proceeded to get my "affairs" in order. My daugher's 10th b-day party was scheduled for the afternoon of the 4th, but I found family members that were willing to help out. Once I had the kids and the house handles I went to get my bloodwork done at the hospital. I returned home to a ringing phone. It was the doc's nurse calling to cancel the procedure. Apparently the anesthesia department did not feel that I was an "emergency" case and could wait until August 28th. I completely LOST IT!

Doc admitted me that night for pain management, planning on discharging me the next day. He visited me at 8:40am with news that anesthesia could work me in between 11am and 12pm.......then his pager went off. They wanted me in the O.R. at 9:30am!!!!!!! I had to call hubby, mom and worried about the single cracker I had eaten since midnite. I went into surgery with my kids, mom and hubby around me......crying all the way down the hall. My doc held my hand, like he always does, and talked to me like nothing unusual was happening. I expressed my desire for stiches rather than staples and told him to take care of my future sex life while he was in there. Finally, as I was dozing off, I asked him for a tummy tuck (joking) and he laughed as he brushed away my tears and told me that everything would be fine.

Since that is the best part of my story and I am not even 2 weeks post-op, I will conclude by stating that I was out of bed by the next morning, walking the halls within 48 hours and sent home after 3 days. I have not felt this great since any time I can remember. Yes, the stitches, incision, etc ache....but the chronic pain is GONE!!!! Now I just need to get beyond the next few weeks of my recovery. I start my final year of classes the day after Labor Day and look forward to my pain free life!

Thanks for giving me the forum to share!

Phyllis B.
