I had a vaginal hysterectomy back in 1995, but kept my ovaries. I was 36 at the time and was suffering from a prolapse following the birth of my 4th (large) baby. My girlfriends begged me not to go ahead, saying i was too young, i could have the prolapse repaired, a hysterectomy was too final, too extreme etc etc. However, I had 4 young kids and at that time certainly didn't want any more, so i decided to proceed.
The procedure itself, and the recovery wasn't too bad, the biggest problems involved the logistics with the kids, not being able to lift, or drive for a while. You really do need to take it easy for the first few weeks.
However, looking back, I do not regret my decision at all - since 1995, I have had no periods, haven't had to worry about contraception, and don't need to worry about cervical/uterine health problems. My sex life is great, and although my consultant advised that I may experience menopausal symptoms around 5 years earlier than I would have done if i still had my uterus, so far no symptoms at all.
So what I would like to say to all of you waiting for, or considering the op......don't be afraid or anxious......it could just be the beginining of the rest of your life!!
