Ask A Doctor
Hi Ladies,
Well I'm back from the castle, thought I'd wait a few days cause I could barely sit up in bed to type this. I am now five days post op
To briefly explain my reason for deciding to get a hysterecomty ( yes it was my decision) was because I was tired of always being in pain. I was diagnosed with Premature Ovarian Failure when I was 21. The doctors were stumped when my blood tests revealed that I was going through pre-menopause, as they like to put it. I had been through a slew of tests, an army of doctors all to be told the same thing "We're sorry Miss but your ovaries have "shut down" for a lack of better words. I was delivered the news by a OBGYN who totally lacked bedside manners and just bluntly told me I could no longer have children. When I asked him what this means, he said I would suffer the same symptoms as a woman going through regular menopause and once I hit the age of normal menopause, I would go through it all over again *cry*. All this because I was a month late and thought I was pregnant at the time !
I was then referred to a specialist in endocrinology who I've been following ever since. I met him maybe a year after all those tests and doctors. He is a really nice man and is one of the best in his field in my hometown. He started me on hormone therapy cause as the Gyn had predicted, I was starting hot flashes and night sweats, memory loss and moodiness, oh and the list goes on and on O_O
Maybe a year later that's when I started suffering from abdominal pain. The only way to describe it was "someone attaching a string on my ovaries and yanking very quickly on them" not something any of us wishes to experience This was maybe after trying out a good dozen types of hormones, some that would give me wicked awful nightmares, others would make me cry or make me break out in skin rashes ( hormone patch- awful stuff!). So he suspected endometriosis. Of course I was clueless to what it was, but after he explained it, it made sense as to why as a teenager I always had bad cramps, sometimes to the point I couldn't roll out of bed, my legs were so sore!
The first surgeon he sent me to was sceptical about the endo. she made me feel horrible, like I was lying and even suggested it might just be "gas pains". She performed the surgery and found some endo here and there, removed it but warned me that if the pain came back she would not help me anymore saying "obviously if the pain is back the surgery was not successful".
I then moved on to another surgeon after the pain came back after a year's time. He convinced me to do another lap instead of a hysterectomy "since he was a new doctor to me" so I let him convince me to do it his way but warned him if the surgery was not a success we would then do it my way, he agreed.
When he went in there, they found a lot more extenssive damage and almost removed my left ovary in the process but were able to save it. My bowels were pulled up and stuck to my ovary O_O. But however the pain relief was short lived, a mere five months after surgery , the pain was back!
So this is my story of how I got here. I went in to the hospital on December 12th 2008. My mom came with me for support. I called my bf at work to let him know I was heading in to the surgery now and that I loved him and tried to reassure him everything was going to be ok. ( He wanted to be there with me but the buses in our city had gone on strike a few days before hand so he had no way to come back home to take care of the pets.)
The surgery itself went well, I was surprised when they told me it would take two and a half hours, which in the end turned out to be four hours total. They also did a cystoscopy which is an exploration and repair of the bladder. My doctor did a thourough job at removing all the endo as well.
I had an excellent nurse taking care of me, I was only there for the overnight stay. My roomate however was not so nice, she went as far as saying "that's MY bathroom" when the nurse came to help me use the washroom the first time after the catheter was removed. Talk about being selfish! I had a bit of an issue with the IV line, when the nurse came to put a stopper on it so that she could temporarily unhook me from the line, when she removed the line, it started pouring blood everywhere from my line to my arm and the bed O_O but everything was ok in the end.
I am now home resting. I have excellent care from a male nurse ( my bf) :P he's a real sweetheart with me and my mom is here during the daytime to take care of me while he is at work.
I'm still quite sore. First BM brought me to tears despite me being the good patient and taking my stool softeners twice a day as per doctors orders. My belly started to swell and bruise yesterday and my stitches are a tad itchy, I know all good signs that I am healing. I can't wait to take a normal bath or to be able to do regular everyday things without feeling exhausted afterwards. I know I have to be patient as I am still in the very EARLY stages of recovery.
Finally the reason I love this site, hystersisters really was a blessing to come here and talk to all the wonderful ladies who've helped me calm down and rant whenever needed. I recommend this site in a heartbeat to anyone needing help to go through what I and thousands of others go through almost daily. Good luck to all those in waiting, speedy recovery to those who just crossed over to the other side. It's true, waiting IS the hardest part of it all....don't give up!
