Ask A Doctor
Okay. I'm not new to hystersisters, but I am new to the post-op board.
My surgery was yesterday. I arrived at the hospital at 6 am and was all gowned up and IV'd and everything. The only time I felt anxiety all morning was as they were wheeling me into the operating room. The OR area is kept cold, and the bright, bright lights and the masks on everyone made it seem a bit strange.
I woke up in recovery in a lot of pain, but they did a great job of keeping me in morphine. Despite the anti-nausea meds, I threw up several times in recovery, in the hallway on the way to my room, and in my room. I was relieved to learn that I still had my ovaries and that there was no damage to the bladder.
Pain was my constant companion all day, and I seriously wondered if I would possibly be able to come home today. I wasn't ready to attempt a trip to the bathroom until about 11 pm, and I threw up and nearly passed out so they kept the catheter in me overnight. This morning, after actually have two consecutive hours of sleep with no nursing checks on my vitals, I was able to take a walk down the hall. We took the catheter out, and an hour later I was able to pee. I got to have real food for breakfast. I passed gas shortly after that, which was encouraging.
It was amazing how much better I felt today. Instead of feeling like a ball of pain, I felt like me again. I took a lovely shower at the hospital, and then my husband showed up and brought me home. I've been in bed napping, but I've wandered around the house a little bit, too. My colleagues even had flowers delivered to the house today, and I was very touched by that.
I was grateful for the suggestions from my hystersisters about taking lip balm and my iPod. I also felt very prepared for everything, at least in my mind. Nothing surprised me, and when the nurses or doctor would mention something, it was nice to have it be something I expected because of the posts on this website.
It is amazing what a difference a day can make. The post-op pain is worse than the pain I'd been having before, but this is healing pain, which is somehow easier to deal with.
