My History
After having increasingly heavier and longer periods over the last 10 years Finaly talked w/Dr when my periods were lasting 10-15 days with only a week or two in beteween.I felt so self conscious all the time. Not only was I bleeding all the time, but I was also having terrible bladder leaks an a daily basis. I am in sales, so this was also affecting my job confidence
After a requested ultrasound he found some huge polyps on my uterus. We discussed all options, but he suggested a Heat Ablation First to remove these huge polyps. The polyps were so big, this could also be causing the pressure on my bladder. He thought since the polyps were so big that they would be easy to get and could possibly resolve most of my issues at the time.Ablation goes well-Had swelly belly for a few weeks, but was back at work in only a few days -all in all feeling pretty good WOW! Ok problem solved YEAHHH!!
All was good for a while then BAM a year later 2005 "Aunt Flow" was back with a vengence! OMG you have to be Kidding me, not again!!
I begin to research much more this time, I ran across this site.Began talking with other women, learning more, using resources. This site was a such a wonderful way for me to explore my options and learn additional resources
My gyno runs more tests, comes to the conclusion that because I have an odd shaped uterus that they must have missed some of the Polyps,he explains that this STILL might not fix the problem, due to the shape of my uterus, but wants me to concider a Laser Ablation this time to remove the rest of the polyps. We also discuss the possibility that a Hsyter to remove my uterus (leaving the overies)may be the inveitable if this does not work. After much deliberation, we decide to opt for the Laser Ablation. All is well again, but only for a short period of time.
Within months "Ant Flow" is back and madder than before! This time I have terrible, terrible pain to accompany my periods. I didn't relate the pain with the periods for quite some time, because the pain was so very different this time. It was not only in my pelvic, and back, but traveled all along my right side from my leg to under my arm and shoulder. The pain was so bad that I had to leave work more than once. When the pain came back again, and again I started noticing the connection to my periods that were now back in full swing. The pain would start several days before my period.I still wasn't bleeding as heavy as before my first ablation, but the pain was unbearable.
I ended up just having to deal with this pain for quite some time. Not long after my last ablation,April 2006 my DH had a terrible accident. He was attacked by someone from behind and ended up with a TBI (Tramatic Brain Injury) recovery was long and slow. His recovery had to be TOP priority at this point.
I had been dealing with everything this long, it will be ok- just manage the pain with Meds-it will be fine.
DH is back at work for the last 2years and is doing well after losing 1 job and being demoted from another because of the injury.
OK, so time to talk to my Dr again, after several tests and counseling. The news is as I expected-we now have to decide to have this Hyster-I resloved myself to the inevitable-but it was going to be ok because we are only talking about my uterus, right? To make a long story a little shorter- NO! That pain I described was my right overy. He found some calcification-but there is a possibility we can leave it- we discuss all options- but let's try to leave the overies if possible.
The day of surgery comes, I wake up in recovery to find out that he found sists on both overies and had to remove them.
I am sure if you are reading this you are looking at your options also, so I will say that, I am now one week post op from my TVH and I feel better than I have in over 10 years! I ended up being a good candidate for a new procedure called a Mini Arc bladder sling. It is a little less invasive and easier to heal.I only have 3 small incisions on the outside, but of course all my stiches on the inside.
My only concern at this point is getting started on the hormones, so far so good, but Dr says to expect a bumpy ride, he may have to adjust more than once.I am 41 yrs old, not quite ready for that, but willing to jump on the ride, since it far outweighs what could have been for the next 10years.
All in all I had a good visit to the Castle-and my recovery has been pain free for the most part.I am pretty much off pain meds except at night at this point, but still staying conscious of my limitations.
I left the site for a while to deal with other things in my life, but it honestly feels like home again, as soon as I came back I felt the comfort and support that I had missed so much.
