I am 3 days post op and haven't regretted my decision at all. I wasn't too nervous beforehand either. My day went like this:
I showed up at the hospital at 6:45 am as requested even though my surgery wasn't until 9:45. They gave DH and I a private room to wait in. It had a tv and and all. And although the nurses kept coming in to do my IV, etc, DH and I got a chance to share my pillow and take a nap together while we waited.
When it was time to be taken to pre-op waiting, they wheeled me down and I met the anesthesiologist (sp?) and the assisting doctor and nurses. My doc finally came in and said he was ready and explained what he was going to do again. They wheeled me into the OR and asked me to move to the other gurney. That was the last thing I remember. Next thing I know, the nurse is telling me I am in recovery and everything went well. The surgery only took 30 minutes!!
When they took me to my room, I realized that I didn't have a catheter in. Apparently I wasn't swelling or something, so they took it out. I napped off and on all day because of the pain meds. The pain was tolerable though. They kept me on a liquid diet for lunch and dinner. I had a friend visit for a little and then my family came up. I was feeling a little nauseated at that time but nothing major. Once everyone left, I got up to use the bathroom and grabbed the bucket and threw up. All the liquids that I had in me were now gone. But my tummy felt better.
Even with all the liquid lunch and dinner and still having an IV in, the first time I went to urinate wasn't until around 6pm. I don't know if my bladder was numb or what, but I only went a little bit. I was told if I couldn't go a little more than that, they would have to "straight cath" me. Of course, I tried again and peed more. After that, it seems like I went about every hour!! The blood was pretty prevalent at first, but by morning my urine was almost free of blood.
I had a very restless night between all the trips to the bathroom to urinate, the IV's making their beeping noises when they got low, and people making noise when they walked by the room. My doctor came in around 7:30am on Wednesday to make sure everything was ok and told me I could leave whenver they got my paperwork ready. I was out of there by 10:15 AM.
The blood that I had was tapering off, my pain was under control and I was glad to be leaving. The ride home was ok. A little bumpy, but I didn't have an abdominal incision to worry about. I haven't done much since I've been home and I intend to keep it that way until I'm healed!
I have had a great experience and know it was the right decision for me.
