I am 41 and suffered from debilitating painful cramps and heavy bleeding for almost 6 years, ever since the birth of my only child. After having to use Vicodin around the clock and still not getting relief, my doctor finally agreed that I was a candidate for hysterectomy. (I long ago decided not to have any other children.) I have left both ovaries intact.
He was one of the few doctors in our state trained in the DaVinci method but I trust him and found the pros very attractive - less pain, less invasive and less recovery time.
I am now one week post-op and am happy with the overall results so far. The pain from the surgery was actually much less than what I had every 3 weeks with my period and I have managed it with very little Vicodin.
Like others, I found the catheter and the bloating/gas pain to be the worst post-op symptoms. But, I had the catheter removed the morning after surgery and the gas pain slowly went away and dimished considerably after my first bowel movement 3 days after surgery. I have to say I never had so many people interested in if I had "passed gas" yet and found that quite humorous.
The challenge for me now is not to do too much too soon - because it is a faster recovery time, one tends to think it's all better and I have had to consciously slow myself down - although I should say I am a Type A person. But, with a 6 year old, I am managing very well and I got a thumbs up at my 1 week post op check-up. It turns out I had adenomyosis and was assured that it was not "all in my head." Never thought it was!
I would recommend this method for those that can consider it and wish everyone luck and good health.
