I have had such wonderful support on this forum from my sisters before and after surgery, I promised myself I would post afterward and hopefully help another sister who was having trouble. The short version is that I have had heavy, painful periods with large clots for 30 years. Over the past 3-5 years I have been diagnosed with fibroids, one large and several small, and my periods have come closer together, with bleeding feeling like a pitcher was pouring from my body for 2-3 days every three weeks. No other signs of menopause except some hot flashes. Needless to say I was anemic all the time, my energy was zero, and I was missing doing the things I love to do because I would bleed through everything several days a month and could't stray far from home. Karate and exercise , which always helped my pain, were out when I could not go to class. The decision to have a hysterectomy was very hard- I wanted my body to menopause naturally, like it was intended to do. 1 year ago I had a uterine artery embolization to try and shrink the fibroids and buy time. It was painful and did not help at all. Family and friends didn't understand what I was waiting for- only my husband understood how hard it was to decide to have major surgery for "quality of life". I am an RN, which just makes it harder- I imagine everything I have every heard of and worry about everything. OK- before surgery I was a wreck. This forum helped tremendously when I needed to have as much info and tips as I could get, making lists of things to do, and venting when I needed to. The day of surgery finally came, after clears and bowel prep day- (which was a true joy). I went into the hospital at 5:50 AM, and into the OR at 7:15. My first IV was not in the vein, they put in the med to sleep, and I stayed awake! They kept calling my name, I kept saying, yes, I am awake. They restarted another IV and I went off to sleep. Next thing I knew I was in recovery, had an O2 cannula in, and the nurse told me I had to keep it in, because my oxygen was low. They took me up to my room at 2 PM, and I saw my husband's smiling face- It was so wonderful to see him! The first things he said to me- "you have your ovaries, and they did not need to make the big incision". I was so relieved! The next 2 days were rough- I had trouble with pain control, tried IV and by pills, they took my catheter out, I did go but not emptying, so they recathed me a couple of times. ICE chips was the thing that soothed my very sore throat- I was in surgery for 4 1/2 hours and the breathing tube made my throat very sore. My MD thought I may have done some bleeding into my belly after surgery, but an ultrasound came back OK, and my blood count stopped dropping, so I came home on day 2 after surgery. Even with pain walking to the bathroom and in the hallway really helped. I have been home for 4 days and today I feel well enough to sit here and write, but I am resting and doing what I am told to recover as best I can. Thank you hystersisters for everything, sorry for the long post but maybe it will help another sister who is as scared as I was.
