I had TAH 2 1/2 weeks ago. I was in the hospital 3 days and 2 nights. When I woke up in the recovery room I was in immense pain. As soon as the nurses realized that the morphine wasn't working, they tried another drug. It too didn't work so they tried something else. I gave each drug about 10 minutes and when I was still in pain, I told them. Finally hey gave me Dilauted (sp?) and it was FABULOUS! My advice: if you are in pain, tell the nurse. There is no need to suffer. Yes- recovery is not fun- but you don't have to feel like you'd rather die. I was on a cathe and IV pain pump for a little over 24 hours. When I finally got up and went to the potty, it wasn't as painful as I had feared. I walked bent over and scooted to the bathroom (with help... don't try to do it alone!) I stayed in bed for the first week- only getting up to go to the bathroom. I needed help getting out of bed for teh first 5 days or so. My husband and children waited on me hand and foot. (It was quite nice!) I had staples removed on day 7 and it was completely painless. My hubby rented an electric scooter (like the ones you see the old folks at the amusement parks riding in?) and that made getting around the house much easier. Day #10 was my first day with no narcotic pain meds (only Advil). Still no housework (not even unloading the dishwasher or picking up my own bed pillows or opening the fridge door) for about 12 days. I have someone cleaning and doing laundry for me. Day 15 was like a turning point for me. I had energy- I felt like my old self, but I still didn't "do" much. Day #18 I went to the doc because I had some weird discharge and some vaginal odor. He did a pelvic (not fun... but not as awful as I had feared) and said that everything is healing beautifully!Yesterday (day #19) I made a meal and was up most of the day without using the scooter and after dinner I was EXHAUSTED! Today (day #20) I will definitely be taking a good nap and finishing the book I've been working on.
