Ask A Doctor
I am 3 weeks post-op. I had a total hysterectomy through the DiVinci robotic method. They removed uterus, Both ovaries and tubes. I am 39 years old. When they first told me that this was going to be what I needed, it scared me to death. I couldn't decide if it was the right thing to do or not, guess what? IT WAS! I feel so much better. It turned out that my left ovary was pushing itself into my intestines and the right ovary was calcified and my uterus was gray. This was not detected on a ultrasound a few weeks before and I had a tubal a year prior , so this all developed in the last year. Turns out that I really needed both ovaries to be removed. The surgery wasn't bad at all. Believe me when I say this. There wasn't anything to it. I was up and walking 4 hours later. Very slowly and gently but still up and walking. I pushed my IV pole all around the 2nd floor of the hopsital off and on all night long in short intervals. I had gallbladder surgery & tubal last year and knew from that procedure that it is best to walk as soon as possible because of the gas the use during the surgery. I also brought Gas X strips to the hopsital and started using them when I started walking. The gas was the worst part of the surgery. It stayed in my shoulder area for a few days after but the Gas X helps that to go away. I used them a lot for about a week. along with stool softners. I left the hospital the next morning and in a few days after being home everything was fine. They have really improved this surgery over the last few years and the robotic way is the way to go. I am not very good at needles or being put to sleep or the hospital thing, in fact I am a big baby about all of it, but this surgery was not that bad. I feel like the best way to handle this operation is to have a good mind set when you go into it. If you think positive thoughts then you will be a lot better off. Another concern about removing both ovaries is the hormone replacement. My Dr. gave me sample at his office before the surgery during my pre-op visit (enough for a few weeks) and I brought it with me to the hopsital. He put it on for me the next morning when he came by to realease me. It's called DIVIGEL and it goes on your upper thigh once a day. It's made from yams believe it or not and it has worked GREAT. No hot flashes or night sweats sense he increased my dose from 1/2 mg to a whole mg.
I found that there are a few things that you will NEED during this whole thing the following are a few good ideas.
1. Lots of pillows in all sizes and thickness- you have to sleep upright for a few weeks.
2. grabber stick - in case you drop something- bending over is a No,No for awhile & you will drop stuff
3. Shower bench or chair- it helps in shaving your legs and keeping your products in arms reach
4. Videos and books- it's all you can do for a few weeks
5. Put things that you use often out on a counter or close by because this helps you to take care of yourself with out having to ask other people. such as make up, hair spray, spray cleaner, bread, cups, paper plates etc.
6. take your pain meds - that's why they gave them to you. It helps to break them in half during the day
7. Wear something loose to the hopsital and have a few more for daily wear while recovering- terry cloth swim suit cover-ups work great & T-shirt dresses
8. Gas-x strips - they are life savers
9. stool softner pills - they are a important for awhile
10. Someone to help you for a week - after that you can manage most things - except for driving, laundry, major housework and restricted things.
I hope this helps someone out there who is going to have this sugery. The best part about it is that once you get through it, life will be better with out pain or a period. Hyster sisters is a great place to have questions answered and find new info, I have really found it helpful. Good Luck!
