I had my first GYN surgery when I was 14 for an ovarian cyst. I have always had trouble with heavy periods and ovarian cyst. I have been anemic for 20 + years because my periods have been so heavy.
My surgery was scheduled for 1:15. I arrived at the palace at 11:45. The longest wait I had was waiting to be taken to the prep area. They came and got me about 12:15 to get my IV in all that fun stuff. My family came back about 12:40. Our family pastor came to visit before surgery. We had a very short devotional time and said a prayer. This was so comforting to me. About 1:20 my doctor came in and answered all of m last questions. Then my anesthesiologist came in. He is a family friend so it was nice to know that the people who were going to be taking care of me I not only trusted but knew them.
About 1:25 they came to get me. I was taken to the OR. I had a nice talk with the anesthesiologist and surgery team for a bit. The anesthesiologist game he is “special margarita” , woo hoo I felt like I had drank about 4 margarita’s . My doc came into the surgery room and said “hi” gave me hug. Next thing I knew I was waking up in recovery. I was so cold and in so much pain. Eventually they got my pain under control and I was warm. I told the nurse I had to pee. She said oh honey that is just the gas. I argued back no I have to pee. She said well we are going to get you up to your room. I told her I was about to pee myself she got me a bed pan. But I could not use it.
They took me up to my room and I saw my Mom & hubby. I began to cry and told them I have to pee. The nurses didn’t know if I could or should. I look at dh and asked him just to carry me to the commode. Finally, they allowed me to go OMG I felt so much better.
With that out of the way I got settled into bed. My husband and Mom told me about the surgery. My biggest concern was keeping my ovaries due to a family history of Breast Cancer & I don’t want to go on HRT’s. They told me that one of my ovaries was attached to my bladder. However he was able to save my ovary and repair the bladder. Other than the LAVH went as planned. I left the OR with a pain ball. This was not like anything I had seen or heard about. It goes directly into my largest incision. It administers pain meds & antibiotics into my incision automatically. It will stay in for 3-5 days.
My pain level was always taken care and kept at tolerable. I had amazing nurses and care partners. I was allowed to go back and forth to the restroom with help. About three hours after getting to the room I was walking the halls with help. Like usual with being in the hospital I was not able to sleep more than a few hours at a time. It didn’t help that during the night a patient was running up and down the hall screaming. It took nursing staff and security to get him restrained.
The doc came in about 8:30 asked how I was. I said I wanted to go home. He looked at my incisions. Talked about the rules after a LAVH and sent me home. I left the hospital just after 10:00. My first stop was to my Mom & Dad’s to see my kids. A huge hug and kiss from them and I was better. I stayed there why dh went to the pharmacy.
Once home I ate some lunch. Then I headed to bed and slept for about 4 hours. It is so good to be home. Thanks for all the well wishes and prayers
