I am the 5th week TAH ... still in my castle
After 9 years of heavy bleeding (to a point where I am using sanitary napkin everyday), low hemoglobin level, bad headache, many absences of works, easily exhausted, limited physical activity and so on, I finally decided to undergo TAH on July 6, 2009.
July 3, Pre-admission activities, included x-ray, blood test, consultation for anesthesia and drug allergies, and deposit. Was still happy as a bird
July 6, 11:30am, went to the operating theater. Couldn't help but feeling lonely and sorry about myself. Thinking that I'm 36, divorced with no kid, and have to undergo TAH--it sounds so final and permanent, doesn't it?
But, I told myself, "this is God's way and after this, I'll be in better shape" So, I stopped crying.
Around 12noon, I met my obgyn, and he told me that I would undergo TAH, kept both ovaries. Five minutes later, the anesthesiologist gave the drug and I was out within 5 seconds.. The surgery was 1.5-2 hours
When I woke up, I only remembered vaguely that a nurse handed me the morfin pump that I could use when necessary, with 5 min interval.
Boy, am I glad to have this pump at my disposal.. Compared to my 2 previous myomectomies (my TAH incision is at the same site as my myomectomy's) where I was only given an oral analgesic, this certainly made a world difference and made my pain more bearable.
So sisters, make sure you have access to this pump. Also, I remember that I had a pipe coming out from my wound - for drainage.
July 7th, learned to sit.
July 8th, learned to walk & took off my catheter
July 9th, discharged from hospital (4th day)
During my recovery, I totally stop any work-related activities. I spent most of my time watching tv and reading self-help books and the bible. While in my castle, I have both the King and the Queen as my support system. They are God's gift.
And last week, I joined HysterSisters. I feel relieved that now I know that I'm not alone. There are many sisters who are my angels. Their stories and experiences really give me a healing energy. Also, the "weekly milestone" of what to expect post-op really does help. I wish I joined this community earlier.
For those who will undergo the same procedure, my take on it: it's not as bad as I previously expected. Take care and keep the faith, Anastasia
