**** Warning this is long****

This is my hysterectomy story.......

It all started when I was 8 or 9 yrs old I met aunt flo and she was a horrible person. I have always had painful periods to the extent where I would curl up in a fetal position for the first 2 days of my period. I would go through a pack of maxipads extra heavy or overnights of 24-36 pads for 5-7 day cycle.

Fast forward 8 to 9 yrs and Im pregnant with our first child at the age of 17. I had our son Mikey a few month before I turned 18. I immediately went on the Depo-Provera shot per my ob/gyn request to try to control my peroid and also my husband or fiance at the time and I had decided we would wait to have more children. The depo-provera shot was suppose to help with the heavy menstraul cycles and regulate my peroids (which it did not help with the heavy periods but it regulated them). I used the depo shot for 2 yrs then we (hubby and I) decided to try for another baby. It took us 2 yrs to conceive our 2nd son. Unfortunately we lost him at 4 1/2 month into the pregnancy due to a cord accident. We decided to wait to give ourselves emotional healing. I still continued to bleed heavy and suffer pain for 4 more yrs until we conceived our daughter and had her in 2006. We decided this was enough children for us so we went ahead and had a tubal ligation in 2006.

The time finally had came to be able to concentrate on how to manage my heavy painful periods so my ob gyn reviewed our options. I had test preformed in 2006 found out I had fibroids. She started me on birth control pills and the last I ended up with was Yaz. I was on Yaz from 2007-2009. I kept telling her I was done with the pain and suffering to please refer me to a doctor who would remove my uterus because I had read all about the other alternatives. She still gave me the "you are too young" line and wrote me off with another prescription for bc pills.

I started to have periods that were 7-10 days long clotting alot and major pain. They got worse as the months went by but I just learned to deal with it since my ob gyn was not listening. I went back to her in May 2009 and she finally referred me to an ob gyn I would not be able to get in with her until July 20. I seen her and she also gave me the "you are too young" and "you dont necessarily need to kill a fly with a sledge hammer" line. Well I think I reached the end of my rope when I had my last period on July 13 2009. I did not stop bleeding from this period until I had my hysterectomy on 09/02/2009. I bled for 52 days. Well on July 24 I was on day 12 of my period which was longer then usual and heavier so I told hubby to take me to the hospital went to the emergency and my hemoglobin levels were at 5-6. Has to have a blood tranfussion (4 units). ER doctor said if I had not gone in I could have gone into cardiac arrest. That is when I finally realize this is serious no more putting up with it I am going to take a stronger approach and demand to see another doctor so that I can schedule my hysterectomy. I seen my 3rd and final doctor this doctor did not try to convince me to change my mind he calmly told me about my options and then reviewed my history actually took the time to see what was on my mind. (THANK GOD) Finally a doctor that listened and was actually on my side. Hysterectomy was scheduled for 09/02/2009 which was 1 1/2 wks later.

Surgery Day 09/02/2009
Woke up around 5:30 in the morning. Took shower and started to get ready to head to the hospital. Woke 12 yr old son up to get ready because we were to drop him off at school before we headed to the hospital. Dropped son off at 7:00 and headed straight to the hospital after that I was to check in at 7:30 (hospital is only 20 mins away).

7:20-7:25
Arrived at hospital. Went to registration area confirmed my demographics. They collected my copay and off to the surgery department we went.

8:00
Began being preped for surgery. Nurse comes into room to tell me to change into hospital gown everything off except gown. Vitals taken IV started. Assistant surgeon came in asked questions. Anesthesiologist nurse and Anesthesiologist sp? came in asked question explained what they were there to do. I asked for med for nausea and something to calm my nerves because the more people that came into my room surgery felt closer and closer which was giving me the jitters.

9:15-9:25
Man of the hour arrives (my ob gyn) he asks questions answered my questions I had and then asked if he could do a little prayer before we go into the surgery room. Gave hubby a kiss. Wheeled off to surgery.

9:30
In surgery room surrounded by like 10-15 people. I was moved onto another smaller bed with foam like material felt very comfy. Anesthesiologist said "take a few deep breaths sweetie". Took about 3 breaths and I was out for the count.

2:00
Surgery took about 4 1/2 hrs because the davinci procedure is a slow and precise surgery it takes longer.
I remember being wheeled out and I heard the nurse say "your family will be in your room when you get there". I asked the nurse "did everything go as planned" and she said "yes". I asked "ok so I got the davinci procedure I didnt have to get cut open" and she said "no sweetie you did not have to be cut open you had the davinci procedure". I went back to sleep.

5:30
Wheeled into my suite. My family (hubby, mom, daughter and son) were waiting for me in my suite. I swear this room looked like a hotel room that is why i call it "my suite". I went to ask my daughter to sit with me in bed and she freaked out and started crying (I think she got a flash back of when I was in the hospital when I had my blood transfussion). They left and I was given a menu to order room service anything I wanted to eat (Was I in heaven or what??). I ordered a turkey and ham dinner with mashed potatoes, coke, pasta with butter and parsley and a slice of cheesecake. It came at about 6-6:30 at night and yes I ate it all to the last bite and at around 10 I was hungry again but too bad the kitchen was closed I guess the chefs had gone home . My nurse was able to round up a chocolate ice cream cup, a vanilla ice cream cup, a milk and a string cheese packet. I could have all the ice chips and water too which help get me through the night. I had a catheter on so I didnt have to worry to be getting up to pee lol. Man my tummy hurt though because of the gas pains . I was up every 2-3 hrs to walk the hallway. Finally at 4-5 am I got the catheter taken out I felt like I wanted to go pee and poo but nothing just gas which was oh so painful. Finally 7 am came and the kitchen was open again yay!. I believe I was the first to order breakfast. I ordered a chicken quesadilla, a fruit bowl, a parfait with strawberries, prune juice (to get stuff moving) and a slice of carrot cake. At about 9 am my ob gyn came in went over what he did in surgery and informed me there was a mass on my bladder that was removed by the uro that was oncall that day. Mass was sent to pathology but that I should not be concerned because the uro was not concerned if it was cancerous or not it didnt matter because it was removed completely. I explained to my ob gyn that one of my incision was very sore and my side was killing me. He said that is a usual complaint and that I should be better in a few days. He checked my incisions and said everything looked great I would be able to go home around noon or so. I just needed to go pee and poo before being discharged.

9:30-10:00
Once he left I went pee and poo so I was so happy about that. I let my nurse know and she called the doctor and he said I could be discharged in the afternoon.

11:00

Almost lunch time so I got my room service menu and ordered a hamburger, rootbeer, pasta with butter and parsley, chicken soup, and a slice of strawberry cheesecake all to be delivered by noon. As soon as I was done ordering my lunch a massage therapist came in. I had the best neck and back massage ever. So relaxing..................

12:00
Just in time for lunch hubby and my daughter got there and were able to enjoy some of my room service. My daughter still did not want to get close to me but as soon as my hubby told her I was going home with them she went over to me and grabbed the cheesecake lol.

1:00

Nurse came in and said my discharge paperwork were getting prepared . I was so happy even though this hospital felt as if I was in a hotel not a hospital. I swear this room was huge had a plasma tv, walk in shower, space for a guest to stay overnight if patient chose to (to bad hubby had to be home with the kids), there was patio with patio furniture to sit and enjoy the beautiful night or day.
The nursing staff were exceptional it was an overall excellent experience.

Recovery:

I am 9 days post op and feeling great. Mentally I feel on top of the world. Only complaints are:
-Pain on my left side
-My incisions are sore.
-Hot flashes are killing me even though I kept my ovaries.
-Nausea on and off all day

Other than that I dont regret having a hysterectomy I believe it is the best thing I had ever done besides having my children.

Perk:

- No more mental suffering
- No more worrying if I will bleed through my clothes
- Able to go to outside without worrying if I need to change my pad every hr
-No more buying maxipads

Best of All....................... No more bleeding and abdominal pain.

Hystersisters has helped me cope and deal with all my mental and physical suffering I went through and it is still helping me go through the everyday cycle of feelings and emotions.

Thank you Hystersisters!
