I had the daVinci procedure on Sept. 9th. Before I decided to have it done,I talked to several different specialists as well as my primary. My gyn was out of ideas because the Lupron that I had been taking for pain from endometriosis was no longer working. She tried to increase the dose with no results so felt that I needed a hysterectomy. I was referred to an ob-gyn oncology surgeon who talked to me about my options- basically live in pain or get the surgery. I read about the procedure and decided to go ahead.
My biggest worry was about pain medicines due to several allergies to most narcotics. The doctor assured me that it wouldn't be a problem-that was not true. Day of surgery he asked me what I thought he should give me for pain!! I was absolutely flabbergasted. He's the doctor but wants ME to give him the name of a medicine. The anesthesiologist came in and said we would try Dilaudid. Surgery went well and I woke up shaking. My muscles were just shaking from the surgery. The nurses kept telling me it would get better. Then the pain came and they gave me Dilaudid. Problem within two minutes was I began itching-allergic reaction. Gave me Iv Benadryl- put me to sleep immediately.
I spent about 23 hours after surgery in hospital. I was continually getting Benadryl due to continued itching. My worst problem was intense shoulder pain. I tried Gas X with some relief but still hurting. I found that going to my chiropractor for an adjustment helped tremendously. That finally got rid of the pain.
I am now three weeks post surgery and back to work. I learned one thing and that is to listen to my body. I overdid it the first day at work and spent the rest of the night with a heating pad on and taking ibuprofen throughout the night. My other complication has been an allergic reaction to something-we don't know what-that caused itching and redness with swelling in my pubic area and then a fungal infection there as well. Still treating that.
Despite all the little glitches, I would still chose the hysterectomy. It seems to be helping me.
