I had a TVH and bladder band or sling (?) repair done on Friday, December 4th. I wanted to write on here to let those who are anxious or had never undergone surgery before (which was me!) to know it is OK.
A little about me - am 49 years and the mother of 6 kids and have had 10 total pregnancies. My periods were an every other month item - I must have had only one ovary that wanted to work, but it did! My health issues had nothing to do with bleeding or fibroids, or anything related to the menstrual cycle - mine was due to extreme incontinence. Wore the almost full size Depends pad day and night, changed probably up to four times towards the end. It started off as a dribble during aerobics in the 90's and went to, well, a steady stream....which doesn't do much for your self esteem and hygeine issues! Combine that with very wet relationships with DH....yuck. I knew I had a problem about 3 - 4 years ago but had to time it right.
I went to GYN in October and I must have impressed them when I coughed and bore down, as he apologized for having to clean up the mess! I live in a smaller rural area and my dh is chairman of the hospital board and I had four of my six babies there. I also run our local 4H program and am fairly well known in community - so I found it a relief to know all the people taking care of me. Got lots of hugs and prayers and I liked that!
The other bonus is my local doc was able to assist in surgery - the gyn came to our hospital and did it there with local people assisting. I felt VERY well taken care of and wanted to do it local -- we had a brand new operating area from a new remodel.
I went into the hospital at 7 am. Did not have to do any prep the night before, which I was glad for because I had a high school bball game to go to! They were good about giving me kleenex as I was feeling sad - not because I wasnt' going to have babies but because that was kinda my identity for a long time and then the bladder became my identity instead. What if it DIDN"T work? That was a fear, as well as pain anxiety and the unknown.
They wheeled me down there and put the "it'll be kinda cold and sting" into my IV (yes, that is true) put the mask on and boom! I woke up.
The surgery took longer than expected as my uterus was bigger and longer than expected. The nurses who assisted did find it somewhat uncomfortable to see whatever it was they did with my innards! Must have really been a sight. The doctor was quite meticulous *thank you!* and it put everyone elses's surgerys off for the rest of the day! (Small town, I knew two of the other three, haha)
I felt uncomfortable and definately needed the morphine. Felt like strong menstrual cramps -- I also have sleep apnea which didn't mix the greatest with the morphine and had some issues with high and low blood pressure. My first night of sleeping was difficult due to the monitors but got those off in the middle of the night and finally slept. I know being overweight contributes to the apnea so maybe I have finally reached a recognition point with the weight as well. Time will tell
I wanted to tell my story because prior to my surgery, I wanted to find stories that told me it went OK. We tend to see more of those that have problems. My issue with incontinence is GONE!! I am wearing NO pads. No dribbles. Not even when coughing. So it was WORTH IT! YOU don't need to leak and smell!
I also wanted to let those know that it is doable. This website was amazing in answering lots of questions from real people, not just textbook answers. That's what makes this place unique!
THanks!
