I struggled with ovarian cysts, both functional and endometrial, for the last 6 years. They rupture a few times a year, unpredictably. I had a left ovary and cyst removal and had another lap cyst removal a year later. For the last 5 years since that surgery, I've been trying to deal with pain. It worsened in the last year with right pelvic pain in the second half of every cycle and heavier bleeding.
After 2 ruptured cysts this year, I finally went back to my gyn surgery specialist and decided on a hysterectomy with removal of the remaining ovary at the age of 35.

It was done laparoscopically with removal of the uterus vaginally. I had a lot of adhesions of bowel, bladder, ureter, and peritoneum and had re-growth of the left ovary remnant with more endometrial cysts on it. I also had adenomyosis in the uterus which was why I was having increased bleeding and possibly causing some of the pain.

I stayed 1 night. By the morning I was eating and drinking normally. I had a catheter overnight. Luckily I was able to void after removal. I got dressed and was ready to head home 24 hours after surgery. I reclined on the couch for several days with regular dosing of pain meds. After 5 - 6 days, I was mostly fatigued and only using about 1/2 pain pill twice a day. I was weak as a kitten and very tired.

I went back to work on post op day 11 for a few hours and it was awful. Same on day 12. I did it because I had to - I own my own business, taking care of other people! Then I had a 4 day weekend to get back on my feet. I had to be back full time the third week and it was very rough. I fell asleep on a couch a few times and had some increased pain in the afternoons. I just rested as much as possible and my husband was WONDERFUL about covering everything at home. FINALLY in the 4th week I felt more healed and stronger. There were a lot of odd pains and sensations along the path of healing but this board was SO helpful!

I'm writing this at nearly 8 weeks post-op and I am thrilled! I wish I hadn't waited so long. Last week I started exercising again and cleaning the house as normal. I got the all clear for sex and it was great! The vivelle patch is perfect for me so far.

I was thrilled with my doctor who is in Durham, NC. Drop me a note if you want a recommendation!

This was not a decision I made lightly but I am very pleased with the outcome and with the process of lap surgery.
