My teenage and young adult years were rather uneventful as far as menstruation goes. My problems started after completing my family, having had 2 caesarian sections, and deciding to undergoe a tubal ligation in 2007.
From a normal 4 - 5 day menstruation, I started experiencing 14 - 15 day menstruation. Besides all the pain and discomfort, it was also most inconvenient for my husband and I.
After numerous attempts at medicinal treatment, including birth control and Cyklokapron (a hemostatic), it was decided that I would have a hysterectomy, especially seen as we had already decided that our family was complete.
At 33 years of age, I underwent a hysterectomy. They removed my uterus and cervix, but left my ovaries behind. I woke up in quite a bit of discomfort, with a pain pump in my hand. The first 24 hours were a blur of not being able to find a comfortable way to lie and drifting in and out of sleep.
The following day, the catheter and drip were removed, I had a shower and from then on have not looked back once.
Tests revealed that I had adenomyosis, for which I understand, there is no treatment, beside anti-inflammatories or a hysterectomy.
I do believe I made the right decision for me and have never regretted it for one moment. I am surprised on a daily basis how much I feel the same as, if not better than, before the hysterectomy... no problems with intimacy, or any hormonal issues... only difference is I dont ever to worry about periods again!
