I decided to have a hysterectomy after many attempts over the last 10 years to control my heavy bleeding. Birth Control pills worked for about 3 months. An Ablation worked for about another 3 months still had periods. My periods went back to heavy but no where near as bad as before. Found out from pathology I had adenomyosis. My only option was hysterectomy. I postoned that since I was only in my 30s and didn't believe women in their 30s had hysterectomies. Boy was I wrong! Recently my periods became very heavy again. My one fibroid had grown into three large fibroids. Was having "accidents" at home and work. I couldn't take this anymore so I decided in November 2009 to have the hysterectomy. Due to the size of my uterus and fibroids(it was the size of a 7 month pregnancy), I was informed I would have to have an abdominal procedure. If I had it done sooner, I could have gotten away with laproscopic procedure. Regret that. So on Dec. 28, 2009 i had my procedure. My doc had to remove my 3 fibroids first just to get at my uterus. I lost ALOT of blood I was told later. I was scheduled for a transfusion the next morning but they cancelled it when my blood tests came back normal. Yeah. Also, she found that one of my fallopian tubes was bleeding from being overextended by one of my large fibroids. So who knows how long I had been bleeding internally from this? One reason why I was always sooooo tired. So she removed the ovary as well. I was sad about that. The pathology came back the ovary was normal and healthy. Made me sad I had to lose it. I did keep one ovary by my choice. I kept my cervix as well. Tests were normal on that as well. I also decided to get the hyster since one of the fibroids was jutting into my bladder causing me incontinence and a year before I had a cancerous tumor removed from my bladder. I am one and half years tumor free and did not want to think about getting uterine cancer. My hospital stay lasted two days. the first day after surgery was quiet. Drank mostly water all day. Tried to eat but the food was atrocious. I ended up vomiting in the afternoon from the anesthesia. that night was rough. I was nauseous and had headaches. the nurse said I had to walk to get my bladder and intestines working again. But I couldn't because I got more nauseous when I got up to walk. it was a catch 22. By morning I was feeling better and passing urine. I tried to eat but the food once again was yuk. that night I ended up not sleeping since i was up every half hour urinating. my doc came in at 7am the next morning to see me and said I could go home if I felt up to it. I was up to it! i had family at home for the rest of the week to help me. I am now 3 weeks into recovery and I feel great and normal again. And no more periods!!! I'm ready to go back to work but I have 2 weeks before I see my doc and she can approve for me to go back to work. So I relax, make phone calls i've been needing to make, contacting long lost friends, finally driving again and visiting friends and window shopping ( for a short time)!!! Don't over do it or your belly will be aching and burning. I know all too well. Hystersister.com was a god-send for me. it helped me to make my decision about keeping my cervix and ovaries. The stories and advice are soooo helpful before you experience the procedure and the hospital stay. And the Belly Binder with cold packs is very important at least the first week or two. I use the cold packs at night to calm the itching from my incision. Getting the hysterectomy was one of the best decisions I've made. Good luck and hugs to all my Hystersisters! Georgianna
