Hello, I'm Julie and I just had a TAH with a bladder repair on 1/18.

I am 48 yrs old and had not yet gone into menopause or peri-menopause. I just continued to have longer and heavier periods. I opted to have an ablation on 10/08 which did not work. I had the ablation and seemed to be healing like I was told. Then 3 months later had a period. They continued to come monthly and continued to be heavier and heavier. I also had break through bleeding often.

So they put me on the pill. They opted for the one that you take 3 months and then have a period. I laughed because I had my tubes tied 21 yrs ago. I continued to have bleeding and break through bleeding. 6 months after starting the pill the NP suggested just taking it like a regular pill and have a period monthly. Well I was back to what I had before the ablation. I tried it then went back to 3 months at a time. No changes. Always bleeding or spotting. Not fun.

Talked to MD (who also delivered my 2 kids 24 and 21 yrs ago). He made it totally my decision. He said in 2 yrs I will not be able to take the pill, I will maybe in menopause or not. We could continue with the pill and breakthrough or have a TAH. My uterus was the size of a 3 month pregnancy from fibroids caused from the pill. So the decision was made.

I asked if I could have a vaginal surgery. Because of the size of my uterus and my need to have my bladder repaired we had to have an abdominal one.

I proceeded to have a bladder test to verify the need to repair it. I would benefit from it so the date was set for 1/18.

I arrived at 5:30 am and was taken to the OR at 7:30. My husband was getting nervous because the people who came in at the same time as me were already being taken to their rooms or being discharged. The doc had down that it would be about 1:50 minute surgery. At 2:15 he came out to say it was finished and I was in PACU. I went to my room at 11:30. I felt every bump on that ride.

I was in a lot of pain. I'm not a wimp as far as pain, but this hurt. I had a cath in. My narcotic cocktail included IV Demerol, Torodol and Morphine. I had demerol and torodol as often as I could and morphine once. I was on a liquid diet until advanced, who wants to eat at this time. I guess I asked for jello and fell asleep with it on my chest. My nurse worked very hard to get my pain under control. She did a great job. My husband left for the evening and I slept as often as I could. Between the vital signs and the nurse checking on my pain I never really slept.

At 4 am the CNA came in to take my foley out and walk me. WHAT? It hasn't even been 24 hrs!! I made sure I was pre-medicated and did what I had to do. I now needed to pee but I had the pneumatic hose on that had to be turned off and taken off before I could get up. I finally had them off. I walked a little farther each time I walked. I was up to 3 laps around the nurses station (which is actually 2 back to back) by the time I discharged.

I did go in to the hospital dehydrated... long story.... so my kidney's weren't putting out much. My nurse also worked very hard on that as well.

I spent 2 nights and went home this past Wednesday. Our bedrooms are all upstairs so I spend most of my time there. I sort of over did it with stool meds and my first night home I spent it getting up and down with liquid BM.... this made me hurt much more having to get up. I think I am on schedule for recovery. I have showered a couple times and was instructed to take the steri-strips off today. The incision looks good, not red and well approximated. I am scheduled to be off work for 6 to 8 weeks. I'm already bored.

I set up netflix in my room. It's ok, older movies are ready to play, have to order DVD's of more current. I am taking Vicodin. I try to stretch it out longer than every 4 hrs. Today I have been down stairs and took a shower and a walk outside. I think I've over done it. Will eat dinner and go to bed.

Julie
