Ask A Doctor
My story began many years ago. I had always experienced pain from my endometrosis. I never knew day to day if I was going to feel okay or be in pain. I had experienced some functional cysts that went away on their own. However, a couple of years ago I had a terrible pain on my right side with an urgent feeling that I had to empty my bladder all the time and bowel problems. After an ultrasound it was determined that I had a 7cm endometrioma on my right ovary. I chose to go on birth control and follow it to see if it would shrink. I stayed on the birth control for a few years. Our insurance had changed and I had yet to find a GYN that I felt was truly following my endometrioma. It was this past December that I chose to try to leave behind my birth control. It was killing my libido and I was scared of the side effects that were being reported. I started to experience the right sided horrible pain again. I had an ultrasound and my endometrioma never shrunk. It actually grew!! It was at this point that I decided to seek a second opinion. That was when I met my Dr. He looked into my case and we decided as a team that it was time to have the hysterectomy. I was tired of the pain and not being able to control it, I was tired of the birth control and most importantly I wanted back my life. I wanted to enjoy my kids. We adopted both of our children and and after struggling with infertility for so many years and the disappointment I do not want to miss a thing!!!! I wanted to be able to enjoy being intimate with my husband.
I choose to have a TLH with my left ovary being left behind. The right could not be saved.
On Surgery day I had to be at the hospital at 5:30am with my surgery to start at 7:00am. My surgery took approx. 1 hr 45min. I woke in recovery with pain and a little shortness of breath. They gave me morphine and the next thing I knew I was being whisked away to my room. I had another dose of Morphine and then was given Toradol every 6 hours. My pain was very minimal. I did awake with a catheter in place. I walked as soon as I could to get that removed. I was up and walking the halls with they nurse around 9:00pm. I did not feel like eating much but Popsicles and hot tea. The next morning I took a shower, ate breakfast and then was discharged.
I stopped the pain meds 5 days after I was home. I did not take them all the time. Just first thing in the morning and right before bed. After 5 days I took Advil whenever I needed any pain relief. I had some emotional issues up to a week almost two weeks after. At about the two week mark I started to feel better and I just kept coming.
For the first two weeks I found it difficult to walk around and the fatigue was enough to make me want to scream. After about the two week mark I just started to feel better almost everyday. I still tire easily but the fatigue is not as bad. I went back to work at about 3 weeks for half days. I am returning tomorrow full time. I am currently at 4 weeks. All the lifting restrictions have been lifted. I can walk longer distances and feel fine. The only thing is by the end of day my belly has a little discomfort. I do have a 6 week appointment to check my vaginal cuff to check the sutures. Hopefully they are all dissolved and we will get the okay to resume sex.
I do have small children at home. I had a changing station set up on our bed. I placed a step stool and our little one climbed the step stool with help unto the bed and I could easily get him dressed and change his diapers. We spent a lot of cuddle time in the recliner. He is 22 months and we converted his crib into a toddler bed which made bed time a breeze for us. We placed a booster seat on a chair which he could climb into which made feeding him easier. Our oldest is 7 so it was pretty easy to help him out.
I am looking forward to getting back to my life and feeling better everyday. I know for me that I made the best decision.
