Ask A Doctor
After a lifetime of cervical and ovarian troubles, it was time to have it all removed. I had a total hysterectomy including the removal of my cervix and ovaries at the age of 39 using the Davinci surgery system.
I made this decision because while I'd had 12 other surgeries/procedures on my cervix, had painful periods, and had my tubes tied at the age of 32 (I have a beautiful 13 year old daughter), what really pushed me was my migraines. In the past few years I had developed DEBILITATING migraines all centered around my cycle. I had 26 botox shots in the back of my head and shoulders every 3 months, I was on a daily preventive drug, I ate (and still eat) strictly organic and avoiding all migraine related triggers. I lived in silence and darkness trying to keep the migraines at bay. Finally, when I was in fear of losing my job because of all the time I missed, and when I missed yet another family outing because I was sitting in a dark room, throwing up, I decided enough was enough.
My doctor recommended the Da Vinci surgery system for my hysterectomy and it was the best decision of my life. The first week post-op was rough, I'll admit. But not nearly as bad as I thought. I had a lot of bloating and gas. I roamed my house in my bathrobe in the middle of the night trying to "walk" out the gas. I popped one of my incisions from a sneeze, etc. But just like childbirth, I can't remember the pain now and stand here today saying, 'it was easy'. I know it wasn't easy, but looking back over the last six months, I'd take that post-op over a migraine any day.
I started out with the intent of no HRT. Then I got hot flashes and night sweats. Forget that! I called my doc and she put me on a tiny tiny dose of estrogen.
Then a few months ago, I had crashing fatigue. I mean CRASHING..I could barely keep my eyes open at the office. My friends told me to get my thyroid checked. I did. I was fine. Then I decided, what if I got up early and went for a brisk walk in the mornings? That's what I did and I'm hooked. I walk 3 miles every morning before work. My fatigue is gone.
Now, I turn 40 later this week. I'm excited to turn 40. I feel better than I have in years. No headaches, no pains, no worrying about carrying tampons, no PMS, no mood swings, no night sweats. I feel AMAZING. My three little incisions on my belly are almost unoticeable (thanks to Vitamin E rubbed on it every day). I feel so confident I bought a new bikini for my Vegas birthday celebration!
HysterSisters has been an invaluable asset for me. I researched before my surgery, I lamented about post-op with other ladies, I have checked in and posted questions, and answered a few too over the past 6 months. Its a wonderful wonderful site.
I don't know many 40 year olds who have had a hysterectomy so this is a wonderful confidential place to be able to connect with people who have gone through what I went through. Its a great place to provide inspiration for others, all while getting some in return.
Best of luck to those of you going through the surgery soon. You can get through it. You can do this. You are a strong intelligent woman. You will come out better on the other side of it all. You have support through this community. You have support with me. And if you're anything like me....you will laugh and clap and cheer the day you give your extra boxes of tampons to your friend! WHAT A GREAT DAY!
