My TAH/BSO was scheduled for 11:30 on Oct. 2. When I went for my pre-op appointment they asked me to be at the hospital at 10:00. About 8:45 that morning the hospital called and asked if I could come in right away as the Dr. was running earlier than expected. Being only 10 minutes away we hopped in the car and took off. As it turned out they took me in at about 11:00, only 30 minutes earlier.
I was a bit surprised that I didn't see my Dr. or anesthesiologist until they wheeled me into the OR. I was pretty calm until then. When the anesthesiologist asked me how I was doing I responded, "Much better before they brought me in here." He said, "I know, this really isn't a place anyone should be brought into sober. So let me take care of that for you now." He started the IV and that's about all I remember until I woke up in recovery.
They gave me an intrathecal injection, which they told me would provide additional pain relief for 24 to 48 hours. It only lasted about 8 hours, but was worth it while it lasted. I was on a PCA pump for the first 24 hours as well. The nurses were not as attentive to the pump as they probably should have been as it ran out of medication once and then just stopped working. Whenever I buzzed for the nurses to check it, they just told me that I would only get a dose every 10 minutes no matter how many times I pushed the button. Well darn it, I knew when I was getting a dose or not, and I wasn't. Anyway it took about 2 hours for them to decide to switch a part in the pump and get me medicated again.
The next day after they unhooked the PCA and took out my catheter, I was a free woman. Ready and willing to roam the halls. As long as kept up with the pain meds I actually felt really good. I had a slight problem with the IV on day 2. They told me it had infiltrated, which I guess translates to, it popped through the vein and was pumping fluid into my hand. It didn't hurt at all but my hand looked like a latex glove that had been blown up. It was pretty funny looking.
Several bowls of broth and jello, and later oatmeal, they decided to release me on Friday. Yippee!
It has been 8 days now since my surgery and I really feel a lot better than I thought I would at this point. Sore and slow, but able to get around and do a lot more than I expected I would. I am taking little walks, drinking lots of fluids and resting when my body tells me to.
Love and thanks to all on this site that helped me get through this! I don't know what I would have done without everyones support.
