Ask A Doctor

I'm 31 years old and I just recently had a Hysterectomy done. I was told 2 years ago that I would need one, cause I had a prolapsed uterus. My doctor told me that the pains would get worse over time and when I felt that I couldn't take it anymore to let him know.

I had talked to some of my family members about it and they reassured me that it was a good thing to have done. Pretty much every woman on my mom's side of the family that was older then me, has had this done. Most of the women in my family on both sides have some type of female problems, so I knew that I would have to have this done sooner or later.

So on March 25 I had my pre-op appointment and told him that I couldn't enjoy anything anymore. My surgery was scheduled on April 14th, I was happy to be having it done. I had to be at the hospital by 6:30 am. When I got there, the nurse told me to go to the lab and get my blood band. After I got that, I went back to the recovery room to get weighed and settled in b4 my surgery. The nurse asked me if I needed to use the restroom, cause it was going to be a while b4 my surgery. She put my IV in my right hand, cause I'm left handed and then another nurse put the support hose on me and wrapped the leg cuffs around my legs.

After all the questions and signing papers, the anesthesiologist came to see if I wanted a spinal or if I wanted to be put to sleep. After talking to him for a while, I decided to get the spinal. Shortly after the anesthesiologist left, my dr. showed up and asked me if I was ready. I told him yes and then he left and two nurses showed up to take me to the operating room.

Once in the operting room, I had a nurse in there named Kathy. My mom who has been gone for almost 2 1/2 years name was Kathy. That make me feel good, cause it was like she was w/me in the room. I told the nurse my name, b-day and what I was having done. I remember sliding over to the operation bed and sitting up to get the spinal. I don't remember laying back down. I only remember little things that went on in the room.

By the time I got back to recovery I was alert again and was talking to everyone. I couldn't wiggle my toes yet, but I could feel them touching my legs. I only spent a half an hour in recovery and was in my room before lunch time. I did get nauseated a couple of times and vomited once. I got some nauseating medicine, which helped out a lot.

I shared a room w/a 91 year old woman, who was very sweet. She had visiters everyday all day long. I was glad that I didn't have too many myself. I enjoyed being able to watch tv and listening to my iPod. I wasn't aloud out of my bed the whole day Wednesday, so I pretty much just watched tv.

My husband and a lady that we work w/at one of the post offices stopped by to see me that day. It was so nice to see my husband, he was unable to be at the hospital during my surgery. He is a mailman and could not take the day off. Anyways, I wasn't able to have any breakfast of course, but I did get a liquid lunch. I did enjoy the chicken broth and jello. By dinner time I was able to have food. I can't remember now what I had, but I enjoyed it.

The next morning my doctor came in about 9am and took out my packing, which made me feel a little better. I still had a catheter in, cause I had a sling for my bladder. I was also still hooked up to a oxygen and heart monitor. I got up and walked the hall that afternoon right b4 my husband stopped in to see me that day. Later that evening my husband, kids and his parents stopped by to see me. The nurse took me to a family waiting room, so we could visit w/out anyone else around. I walked to the waiting room and back. My children wanted to see my room, so they walked back w/me.

The last day I was in the hospital was the best day of the three. About 2:30 that morning my nurse came in and unhooked my IV machine and then at 5:30 she took my catheter out. I felt much better after that and couldn't wait till it was time to go home. Once my nurse for the day took out my IV needle, I was able to take a shower w/out help. I felt so much better after doing so and it was only a matter of a few hours and my husband would be there to get me.

Once my husband and kids got there to take me home, I was so ready to leave. I missed my family and couldn't wait to be in my own bed. The drive home seemed to take a long time, my husband drove a lot slower then he usually does, lol! He said that he didn't want to hit any bumps and hurt me.

Once we were home, he made sure that I had everything I needed. It was nice not to have to worry about dinner for a change, lol. It was so nice to be able to sleep in my own bed, I finally was able to sleep all night long. I have been post-op for almost a week and I'm doing very well. I will say one thing, I am so glad that I decided to have this done. I really feel like I have something to look forward to again.

Blessings,
Alona
