Ask A Doctor

My situation is not like others that I have read on here. I went in to have a cancer growth removed from uterus. 2 days later my body went into shock, I became unresponsive, had a full body blood transfusion. I then was rushed to the emergency room where they cut open my belly to stop the bleeding and could not. The best chance I had was to do a hysterectomy. I still have one ovary, but everything else is gone.

I was in CCU, moved to ICU and then to recovery. I was given discharge paperwork and NOTHING, I mean NOTHING was explained to me about how I was going to be after this major surgery. NOT TO MENTION... I have been calling for a follow up appointment and do not even get a return phone call. My insurance rep calls and gets no return phone call.

When I came home, being that I knew nothing of what to expect and had a million questions, the only resourceful place that I could find the information I needed was on this website. I have not been to any other site that is so helpful, knowledgeable and sincere in its efforts to give you every apsect of this procedure. I was not able to be informed before I had mine. I do recommend though if you are considering this surgery that you know your doctor, you trust the doctor and you prepare yourself in advance.

I am now a 38 year old woman who will never be able to urinate on her own. I have device in me that allows me to go to the bathroom. I suffered nerve damage with the surgery. They are not hopeful that it will return. Without being too disgusting, I am not able to have a bowel movement without excruciating pain and not once since my surgery have I had a solid bowel movement.

I was hospitalized again for several days and they wanted to perform yet another surgery on my belly to find out why I was accumulating fluid in my belly. I refused and infectious disease took over with massive antibiotics due to results indicating an infection went to my blood stream. I am now on my second month of antibiotics 2 times a day.

I am not saying this happens to everyone. There are so many positives to this surgery for most. I am sharing my experience because the better informed you are of the pro's and con's of this surgery the better emotionally prepared you will be. You are able to tackle the obstacles when they arise or you are able to move on and enjoy the rest of your life.

Best of luck!
