I see where alot of pre-ops are where I was just a few weeks ago, so many questions/concerns and unable to really ask on the post-op side so I'll give you my story and maybe that'll help

I have been having problems increasing more with time, when my periods first started I'd have terrible cramps and what seemed to me like excessive bleeding but being the youngest of 5 sisters I was told to basically suck it up that it was natural. My mom ended up having to have a hyster 20+ yrs ago and it was due to fibroids, when her periods came..they really came there was no stopping them.

I dealt with my periods for many years, having been hospitalized once for the cramps. When my first DD was born in 1995 the cramping seemed to ease up some, but then at my 6 week check up I was diagnosed with cervical cancer. I tell you that was a very scary time for me...being a new mother and having to deal with this diagnosis. I went thru treatment and was successful at treating it, I now had to go thru paps every 6 months as a precautionary measure. My periods did'nt become better or worse the next few years, still painful but tolerable. Then my second dd was born in 1999, she was born with some learning disabilities so for the first few years my periods really were'nt a priority for me and don't really remember much about them except that they were becoming heavier.

I started feeling more and more lethargic and i gained weight (30 lbs) in 2 years time, I went in Oct to donate blood and they would'nt take it saying my iron levels are really low. It took me a while as I was in denial but then I decided something needed to be done, so in March I made an appt to see my OB/GYN whom I really love I told him my symptoms and how my periods have now started coming every 2 weeks and a super plus tampon as well as 2 overnite pads every hour or less were becoming the norm. He felt my tummy and told me I had fibroids, the same thing as my mom. We started the paperwork for my hyster as I knew I was'nt having anymore kids and I just wanted this to be over and done with.

I know for many sisters it can be a debate of do I or don't I but for me it was a no-brainer...I felt happy and relieved like I could finally get on with my life. I just had my TAH on June 29th and truth be told the worst part was getting outta bed for the first time

Once I had done that (overcome that hurdle) it all seemed easier, I made a pact with myself that on Thurs. (2 days after surgery) I would try and get up once an hour and get my own water. It helps so much!! As the more you move the more you move gas, the more water you drink the better your body feels and it gets much easier each time you do it.

Now this is only my experience, I know of some other sisters that have it much much harder as they had more work done in their surgeries I just had a TAH (removed uterus, cervix but kept ovaries) I should also note that once my Dr opened me up I was covered in endometriosis and had half a dozen polyps he had to cauderize out. I may be just over a week out but I feel good and each day I feel a bit stronger (keep in mind I am still taking it very easy!!). Anyway I just wanted you gals here to know that I know what it's like to be on the pre-op side with so many questions/concerns and it's us from the other side that can help answer some of them (of course we're not doctors or anything).

Anyway sorry this is such a long post, you will all have great surgeries and in no time we'll be seeing you on the other side
