My road to hysterville was a long one. I began having severe pain on the first day of my period over 3 or 4 years ago. The first time sent me to the ER, where they decided it had been a ruptured ovarian cyst without doing an ultrasound. My PCP was a bit upset and ordered the ultrasound. She found a small cyst and a good sized fibroid (1.8 cm). The pain started occurring every other month, so she referred me to an ob/gyn. He said he suspected endometriosis and instead of putting me through surgery to find out, he wanted to try BC pills. He said if the pain stopped, we could assume endo. I tried the pills but became short-tempered and moody. I also began gaining weight that wouldn't come off. I told him, but he said the weight gain was due to eating too much and not exercising enough because the Pill won't make a woman gain weight. I stopped the pills. Some of the weight came off, but 6 months later the pain was back. We tried a new pill - same side effects plus a non-stop light period. His PA suggested that I stop the pill but start taking 4 ibuprofen 3 times a day starting 2 days before my period since the pain was "only for one day." I told my PCP that I wanted a referral to a new ob/gyn.

The new dr. did a check-up and ordered a new ultrasound. The large fibroid had gone down a little, but my uterus was speckled now. Her PA suggested a few options, but I told her I was tired of experimenting. We scheduled a fractional D & C to make sure nothing else was going on (there wasn't) and I had my TVH on July 13th.

My dr. told me I had a textbook surgery and I believe her. I have had no pain since the first 2 nights. When I woke up in recovery, I was hurting, but the nurses were right there with the meds, even getting me some Demerol (a shot in the butt!) when it became apparent the IV stuff wasn't cutting it. I spent 23 hours in the hospital, going in at 3:30 on Tuesday and leaving at 2:00 n Wednesday. I have had only minor spotting. I made sure to eat dried apricots every day and drink lots of fluids to avoid constipation and I got lots of good rest.

I don't think any of this would have been as easy without this website. I have been on here every day since I made the decision to have the surgery. I searched the site for answers to my questions and asked in the forums if I didn't find them. The guide was great - even my husband read it! This is one of the best information sources I found and I am glad I joined.
