Ask A Doctor

First of all, I want to start by saying that I wish that someone had pointed me to this site BEFORE surgery so I could've better prepared myself!

Anyway, in April 2010, I was noticing that, when reading at night while laying on my tummy, I could feel "something" like my bladder, even when I had just emptied my bladder. There was like a lump or ball or organ that I could feel. At my hubby's insistence, I finally got an appointment in June 2010. My doctor thought I was pregnant after doing an internal because he could feel something the size of a 20 week pregnancy. I was pretty sure this was not the case and as it turns out, I was right. An ultrasound the next week showed that I had a huge mass, exactly like the doc had thought. I was in university in July doing my Master's but came home for a long weekend to see a surgeon, who told me I would need a full hysterectomy and that the lump would have to come out ASAP. He really scared me with a lot of cancer talk - I thought it would be more of a "let's get this out and go from there".

Anyway, I got an OR date of Aug. 19 and everything came out - no major issues other than a surgeon who doesn't believe in narcotics (NUTS). We got that straightened out though and now I'm a little over a week post-op and doing quite well. The surgeon told me he can say, with 99% surety, that the tumor was benign. He said the lab will still do tests - likely 100 or more slides because of its size - and we will know the results of those by the follow up appointment until Sept. 27th. Until then, I am going to work very hard on relaxing but it is NOT easy. I start University again (online courses this time) on Sept. 14th and I will have files from work to read over but that is it.

Hopefully the story will end on the 27th with an 'all clear' and this will just someday be a distant memory. I hope I will be able to learn even more here on the site and provide a shoulder for a fellow sister or two.

Cheers,
