Ask A Doctor
It has been a long month, but I went today for my post op visit after having a vaginal assited laproscopic hysterectomy to remove both my cervex and uterus. The surgery was done in attempts to eliminate the debilitating pain I had been experiencing which was getting worse as each month passed. In addition to that, the Dr completed a cystoscopy to check my bladder and place a bladder sling to help with stress incontinence which I thought was just a side effect of having children. Little did I know there was something they could do to fix it. I thought, while he was going to be in there, why not fix it all right?
The first 5 days after surgery were great, I felt wonderful until I developed a UTI. 10 days later, I happened to get an upper respitory infection which developed into pnuemonia. Which was in fact a good way to test to see if the bladder sling worked and I am happy to say, I did not experience any urine leakage with all the coughing I did. I am looking forward to getting to back to exercising without having to wear a maxipad.
The past 4 or 5 days have been amazing as far as the recovery process. I have noticed a drastic improvement with every day that passes.
Today, I went for my post-op appointment and the Dr examined me, and to my surprise, I did not jump off the table and hit the ceiling while he was doing the pelvic exam. What...no pain? How long has that been?
The Dr was pleased to tell me that they were in fact able to determine the cause of my pain (all pre op testing showed nothing abnormal). My uterus was more than 2.5 times the weight of a normal uterus. When doing the post op inspection of my uterus, they discovered that the glands in the uterus were grossly enlarged and engorged and pressing againt the uterine wall which are all signs of Adenomyosis. However, there were no other masses or abnormal cells found, which is a great relief.
I am now cleared for normal activity and all restrictions have been lifted. Although, it was a rough month, it was all worth it in the end and it compared nothing to what I was feeling prior to the surgery. This has by far been the best decision I have ever made.
Hang in there ladies, there is hope and it will all get better....I promise.
