For 15 years I was aware of a fibroid tumor in my uterus. When my son was a fetus it grew faster then he did for a while. The fibroid never really bothered me, and in kind, I let it grow. Soon another fibroid grew out of it like a stem. By summer 2001, the fibroid was 9.6 cm. and it's little stem was the size of an orange. My periods were heavy, but not terrible and I had to use the bathroom often, but was not incontinent. Finally in September I decided I could feel even better, and decided to have a hysterectomy.
I am a single parent, and I didn't know how I would manage afterwards. I read all these posts about loving DH's doing everything for their spouses and knew my recovery wouldn't be that way. I had five weeks until surgery and some nights I would have nightmares about my funeral and that I wouldn't survive the surgery. I started walking 2 miles and working out. I stopped watching the coverage about the national tragedy and the nightmares stopped.
October 22, I had a TAH with intrathecal analgesia (which is a long-lasting narcotic for pain). I came home Thursday. It has been easier than I expected with less pain than anticipated.
