One of the reasons it took me three years+ to have the surgery was because I wasn\'t aware that I had a problem. A routine gyn checkup found a large fibroid (4 month uterus). If you are thinking it must have grown really fast I should let you know that I went 5 years between exams. I was so freaked out by the mention of hysterectomy that I didn\'t go the doctor again for three years - and that was only because of really wierd periods (21 days on, 6 off, 7 on, two months off, etc.) When I did return to dr. my uterus had grown another \"month\".

The hardest part for me, aside from worrying about the pain, recovery or death, was what to do about my ovaries. I was 38 when the fibroids were first found and 41 when my dr said it\'s either the hysterectomy or some gross biopsy every six months (biopsies every six months are pretty motivating). Anyway, I knew I was a canidate for hormone replacement anyway so I agreed to them going too. As it turned out one of my ovaries was in bad shape and would have required going back in at some point. Whew.

The trip to the castle was both good and bad. Good in the sense that everything is surgery friendly - tall toliets, bars, etc. that home doesn\'t have. Bad in that I had a few things go wrong and felt bad at times.

I had a horrible reaction to the adhesive on the bandage that covered the incision. (Dr. said that looks like it hurts worse than the incision). It made horrible blisters - yuck. I also couldn\'t pee once they removed the cathater so they had to recath me with a straight cap to release my bladder. I don\'t know which was worse, the pain from not going or the discomfort of them searching for the \"spot\" where the cath goes. It was humiliating and very uncomfortable as they dug around looking for the right place. I also got sick from the demerol but the medicine they gave me for nausea put me right out so that was good - I was really worried about puking with the incision. I also started to have back spasms from lying on my back. I have an \"ample\" rear and curvey back so laying on my back in anything other than a waterbed is uncomfortable. Those are my four complaints about the hospital recovery.

It\'s all over. I\'m now 4 weeks post op and scheduled to return to work in a few days. I\'m thinking I should have put it off another week but the schedule is flexible and I can work part time till I am ready.

that\'s my two cents. Oh - I don\'t know how I could have done this without help. Hubby was good but Mom coming and styaing a month was really great. I highly recommend it.
