Reading all the post Hyster stories really helped me. I hope that mine helps you.
I had surgery TAH 11/15. Just one week ago today.
I woke up at 6:30 and got my son off to school. The doctor gave me an enema to take, it wasn't too bad. My parents came at 9:00 a.m. to pick me up and take me to the Castle.
While waiting for the receptionist to call my name a woman came in and sat down next to me...I'm not shy and asked her what her surgery happened to be. She told me she was also having a hysterectomy! We both hugged, took a deep breath and shared notes. Her name was Debbie. She went in first (more about Debbie later).
At 10:00 a.m. they took me in, typed up my bracelet and sent me into a room with 10 beds and others lining up to have surgery.
I didn't know that you are put in a big room with other patients men and women lined up for their surgeries. I saw Debbie on the other side of the room also waiting. Debbie was wheeled in at 11:15.
I was wheeled in at noon, they put me in a hallway (very modern surgery rooms from the outside) all lined up in a row ... like garages!
The anesthologist came over told me her name and then I was out! I wasn't even awake for the cathetar! Next thing I know is that I'm in recovery ... was not in pain. My surgery was over at 2:00 p.m. Little did I know I'd be in recovery till 10:00 p.m. due to the fact that no rooms were available at the castle! At 6:00 p.m. my parents were allowed in, and they just told me yesterday that I called my son from the recovery room. I had forgotten that part!
My parents left. Later that evening a baby came in screaming, crying...it was horrible, it was going on for what seemed like over an hour! I finally asked for my room (I had no idea it was soo late or any idea that there were no rooms). About an hour later I was moved to a room with another sister!
That morning at 4:00 a.m. a very nice nurse asked if I would like to get up and walk....so I did! Took off those leg vibrators and we were off around the floor. I was put in the maternity ward, which would be hard if I didn't have any children. But was okay for me.
The stay in the castle was okay, very good nurses. My worry was my blood pressure would go up. (It did - but not much) But I get nervous! My roommate had nausea the whole time, I did not. And remember Debbie who I had met in the waiting room she came by and told me that she had to have a blood transfusion! It's very rare less than 5% of sisters have to have one....but when they operated on her it was much more than they had bargained for. But Debbie was up and walking around and in good spirits!
So I have alot to be thankful for, no nauesa, no complications. The doctor said he knew I was nervous and that I was an amazing patient! One thing I was so worried about was my throat hurting after surgery, guess what?! No pain whatsoever!
I went home Saturday, just two nights in the Castle. Saturday night was pretty rough. I've been sleeping in a recliner everynight! I just can't get comfortable in a bed, and when I'm in the bed I can't get out after laying flat! So the recliner helps me sit up and has been a lifesaver!
The doctor told me that after having surgery it was like getting hit by a Mack Truck. By Sunday, that's the way I felt. What helped me though is that a family member very gently rubbed my back and my shoulders....all I could do was moan! But it felt great! Monday was also a hard day. But by Tuesday, I was off the Vicodin and just taking Motrin! Today it's been one week. I feel good. Really. I feel good. I can get out of the chair by myself and walk stairs without stopping to rest. I've been able to take showers everyday which is a big plus.
My hope and prayers are with all those awaiting surgery that everything goes smoothly for them. It's been a very emotional time for me. And the waiting was hard. But you know what made the waiting tolerable for me was this site! This site was a godsend!
Thank you.
Lisa
