Ask A Doctor

I have pain during intercourse that feel like broken glass. My Doctor prescribed vagifem tablets and within one day the pain was gone. What a great month. When I went back to get a refill, I found out they discontinued the strength of tablets I was taking. The lower strength does not help and I'm now back to square one. Are there other choices?

There are alternatives to Vagifem. If you haven't tried vaginal estrogen cream there are some options. Check with your pharmacist if you'd like to go to your doctor prepared with some specfic options. Often, the pharmacist is a great place to explore the available choices specific to your needs. Once you understand the available options, take the list with you and go back to your doctor. Be specific about your symptoms. Explain the pain, describing it in as much detail as possible and assign a number to the pain along with length of time the pain lasts. This helps to measure the pain for your doctor's understanding.

If you don't like the idea of using a cream, consider asking your doctor for Estring, which is a vaginal estrogen ring inserted and left in place for up to 3 months of continuous release of a low dose estrogen.

Check with your doctor before you add any other other the counter creams or treatments. Sometimes products can be counter-productive.
