Ask A Doctor
I have two large fibroids and was about to schedule a hysterectomy when I read about the importance of a second opinion. Could you give me some pointers on what I need to consider when exploring other options for fibroids instead of a hysterectomy?
You should research doctors in your area that specialize in fibroids and alternative treatment options even if your first doctor told you are not a candidate for alternative treatments or you are not a candidate for minimally invasive surgery.
Myomectomy: Specialist gynecologists do about 100-300 successful myomectomies per year with a horizontal incision or laparoscopically and without the use of lupron for minimal blood loss. The success of a myomectomy depends solely on the skill and experience of the surgeon.
Embolization: You can also explore surgeons who specialize in Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE or UFE) - which is a procedure in which arteries are blocked, cutting off blood supply to the uterus.
Note that not all surgeons are trained identically nor have the same level of experience. It is not only "ok" to ask, but we encourage you to ask questions such as:
How many myomectomies have you done this year?
What is your percentage of "success" with an embolization?
How many hysterectomies do you perform yearly with an open incision?
How many minimally invasive surgeries do you perform yearly?
You can find a surgeon who's speciality is in preserving a woman's uterus by asking!
The HysterSisters.com staff always encourages women who have been told they need a hysterectomy to talk to other surgeons about other options.
