Ask A Doctor

I've been struggling my entire adult life with heavy bleeding, prolonged bleeding, hair loss and depression. I've tried multiple options from hormone therapy to ablation to anti-depressants. Is it so wrong to WANT a hyterectomy in the hopes that I can feel better? I'm tired of facing all this blood - a daily chore.

Struggling with a chronic disorder is never easy. Chronic medical conditions can easily lead to depression and although anti-depressants can be a help, if the core problem is not resolved, the depression may not ease.

Visit with your surgeon about your options. Find a specialist who understands your mental condition as well as your physical disorder. Understand that a hysterectomy can be life changing in other ways. Many women find they are swapping one set of problems for another when facing the recovery from surgery. And you may discover that having a hysteretomy doesn't cure you from your other concerns including depression.

Be prepared to make the final decision yourself with the help of a qualified therapist. Make sure you have explored every option and alternative available first because if you end up struggling with additional physical issues after surgery, your mental condition may weaken further.

We hope and pray only good things for you.
