Ask A Doctor
I was just diagnosed with multiple large fibroids which are causing me all kinds of problems. I've been miserable for years with intestinal problems, back pain, constipation, etc. and it wasn't until I ended up in the emergency room for such severe back pain that the fibroids were finally diagnosed with a CAT Scan. An ultrasound and sonogram also both pinpointed that I have four fibroids, with one large one sitting on my back and an even larger one in my abdomen pressing on my colon and my bladder. And my uterus is enlarged to 13 weeks. What a relief, though, to finally know what was causing my symptoms! But, now what to do?
I'm over fifty. My doctor's immediate reaction was to say that I should wait for menopause when they will supposedly shrink.
That could still be a few years away! My quality of life is suffering! Should I get a hysterectomy? What should I do?
It sounds like you are miserable and you'd like a quick answer to your questions. This is not the time to make a quick decision. A hysterectomy is not reversible. Many women swap pre-hysterectomy medical issues with another set of post-hysterectomy medical issues. This is not an easy decision for anyone.
There are millions of women walking around with fibroids that are asymptomatic. Without symptoms, its an easy decision to wait until menopause when the fibroids usually shrink. Every woman is different when it comes to fibroids. The size. The placement. The symptoms. Your personal medical history will help the surgeon to be able to offer treatment options (including surgery) but when it comes down to the final decision, only you can make the decision based on what is best for you, based on the information you have right now.
Be educated about your choices. Know your options, your potential outcomes and your consequences. After gathering your information and talking to more than one surgeon, make the decision that is best for you.
