Ask A Doctor
I am getting the impression that a hysterectomy should be a last resort, so I'm second guessing my scheduled surgery. I have always had heavy periods and have always been anemic, but I had such prolonged heavy bleeding in May that I ended up in the hospital receiving 2 units of blood, missed 4 days of work, felt awful. I have lower back pain presumably from the fibroid. I know I could try other options, but I'm afraid they won't work and in the meantime the fibroid will grow to the point that I won't be able to have the procedure vaginally. I am also very concerned about side effects both for a hysterectomy and the alternatives! Needless to say, I'm stressing over this! HELP!
Choosing to have a hysterectomy is a big decision. There are a lot of pros and cons. When it comes down to the final decision, it is typically a personal choice.
If you have not researched all of your options, do not be afraid to postpone your surgery. Once you know all of your options and can make an informed decision, whatever decision you make you will feel better about it. You don't want to second guess yourself for the rest of your life if the results are not what you expected.
Hysterectomy has possible physical, emotional and sexual side effects.
There are a lot of options out there for fibroids, including treatments that can actually shrink them. Do some research and make sure you are making the best decision for you!
Get a second or third opinion. If a doctor tells you there is only one option, RUN. There are always options. A good doctor will lay out all of the options with all of the pro's and con's and allow you to make the decision.
