Ask A Doctor

I am having an endometrial biospy next week. Based on an ultrasound, my lining was 8mm (vs. normal 5-6mm). My new gyn is doing just what I want--being very vigilant over me. My Mom died in January of uterine cancer (and also had breast cancer). My doctor understands my personal concerns over my risk factors.

To complicate things, I have large fibroids which seem to bother my doctors more than they bother me. I don't have any fibroid symptoms.

What can I expect with an endometrial biopsy?

An endometrial biopsy is a way for the doctor to take a small sampling of the lining of your uterus. The sample is then observed under a microscope for abnormal cells. An endometrial biopsy is done to check for cancer of the uterus or determine the cause of irregular uterine bleeding for women especially after menopause.

Members of HysterSisters report small discomforts during the short 10-15 minute procedure. Others report a tenderness after the procedure in their uterus. Some women feel dizzy or sick to their stomachs momentarily. The feelings go away after the procedure.

The procedure generally causes some vaginal bleeding and you will need to use a pad for the bleeding or spotting. Your vagina may also be sore for a few days. Your doctor should give you instructions after the biopsy that includes: Do not do strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for one day after your biopsy. Do not have sex, use tampons, or douche until the spotting stops. Call you doctors office or go to the E.R. if you have fever or excessive bleeding (more than a typical period), bad pain or bad smelling vaginal discharge.

Your biopsy results will provide you and your doctor more information to help you make medical decisions for yourself.
