Ask A Doctor
Last year I had a hysterectomy and had my ovaries removed. I'm on hormone replacement therapy but I've been struggling with aches in my whole body. The bottoms of my feet and ankles hurt. My fingers, toes, hips, shoulders, hands and wrists hurt. Is this related to my HRT?
It's possible your body aches are hormone related especially if pre-hysterectomy you didn't deal have the aches. Getting a second opinion is a great idea. Often our surgeon is the doctor who prescribes our hormone therapy post-hysterectomy. Often, they are not the doctors who will journey with us through the next phase of our path as we deal with hormone replacement therapy. It would be a good idea to visit with a specialized doctor, an endocrinologist, who can check your levels of hormones, check your thyroid and determine if anything is going on and should be addressed. They might, also, check for unrelated medical issues such as Lyme disease.
Sometimes, if our body was used to having high levels of estrogen and we replace the estrogen with too little, our body responds with pain. Sometimes, if our body was used to smaller dosages and we replace it with levels too high, our body can respond with pain. One "size" of hormone replacement therapy doesn't "fit" everyone.
Our age, when we have our ovaries removed, have a lot to do with our post-oophorectomy needs. Other factors that alter our estrogen needs are: smoking, weight, overall health and other medical health issues.
Don't be discouraged! With the partnership of a good doctor, you should be feeling better soon.
