A story or perspective: Childless - by Deb

I have read a few threads of such sadness that i want to share the other side of the coin in hope that it may help, even if it only touches one woman.

I grew up wanting only one thing, to be a mommy and a wife. I never had huge career goals. At the age of 21, I met a wonderful man with two kids ages 10 & 12 and within ten months we were married. We were a fulltime family and i loved our kids with all my heart. We didn't add to our family because my husband had a vasectomy after his 2nd child was born.

I had endomeitriosis. Our time was limited to try for a pregnancy, after both kids graduated & moved on to their own adult lives, I was still in my early 30's. We decided that it was now or never. My husband had his vasectomy reversed but it didn't work. Well, we were still young, but we decided that we wanted to enjoy each other. We were contented to live the life ahead. YES. Many times i cried over the baby i would never have. I was a mom, but never got to be a mommy. For some reason i always knew "It was ok, life is OK."

Tragically 6 yrs later my husband of 17 yrs was killed. i was a 38yr old widow. At that time i could of laid down and given up, but my kids (technically my stepkids) needed me, and we did pull through.

Now 6 1/2 yrs later, both of my late husbands children have moved to other states. i have moved on with my life. And now I have said good-bye to my" factory" that i never got to use, when i was forced to have a hysterectomy due to endometrial cancer this month.

That's the facts. But ladies, here's the rest: In my life, both personal & professional, i have helped & nurtured - in small & big ways) SO MANY CHILDREN!

None of them came from my uterus, but they ALL are in my heart ! God gave me the children (my husbands 2) of another woman because she THREW THEM AWAY & they needed me (my daughter reminds me all the time of what my love means to her). I have taken so many children under my wing at work (some from neglectful homes) and watched them blossom into people with a sense of "self" because someone showed them they were"loveable".

I see some of these kids today, years later and they still love me and they're healthy awesome young people!

Please don't think im saying all this for a gold star on my forehead. I'm sharing this with you because I'm blessed to be able to say "childless, why me? BECAUSE ITS MY PATH!"

I hope that i will continue to be the woman who gets up in the morning, puts my feet on the floor and says, "Ok, my feet still work, let's see what today brings!" God Bless You. God Bless Us All.
