Sharing from Debbie:

Dear Sister, I just read your post from last month. I am sorry to hear of your situation but let me assure you: You can love a child that is not from you just as much if not more than a biological child.

If someone would have told me when I was in my twenties I would never have a child of my own I think I would have been devastated. By the time I was 27 and not dating anyone I got tired of waiting around. I had taken care of other peoples children since I was 10 years old. I always had a baby on my hip. I loved babies and I wanted more than anything to be a mother. I started doing foster care as a single parent in 1989 when I was 28 years old.

Since that time I have adopted four beautiful children, three of which started as my foster children and one that was just an adoption (not from foster care). I am still single, have never had a biological child and will soon be having a hysterectomy. I can honestly tell you that the emotional roller coaster ride that I was on with 2 of my foster children. I became the sole defender of these children. I had to watch them go back to birth parents who were neglectful and abusive (on was severely abused as an infant). I immediately fell in love with them and would do anything to protect them. I really feel because of all the trials we went through fighting the foster care system who at the time wanted to reunite birth families at all cost.

Unfortunately almost anyone one can give birth to a child but that in no way makes them a mother. (Please know I am not trying to be insisitive to your infertility). I would give my life for my children. I often look at them and get tears in my eyes and say thank you God for bringing them into my life. I don't know where I would be without them and I'm not sure if a couple of them would even still be alive without me. Like I said they all came as infants the oldest being 4 months old, they are now 5,7,10 and 12 and they are the joy of my life.

I know I have an unusual adoption story and I hope this didn't discourage you. Most adoptions, if done through a reliable source, go very smoothly. Though let it be known that there are literally thousands of children stuck in the foster care system available for adoption just waiting to be part of a forever family. Enough of my soap box. I do pray that you will be able to have a peace that passes all understanding and be able to move forward with yourlife and hopefully be able to build a family through adoption.
