Ask A Doctor
I had a hysterectomy 4 years ago at age 29. I am still feeling down. I will never have the opportunity to have a child. I preoperatively I was diagnosed with an agressive type of Ovarian Cancer and once the hysterectomy was completed, it was determined that I didnt have cancer after all. I feel robbed. I've considered adoption but will that be the same? Anyone out there have these issues? I just thought by now it would be easier.
What you are feeling is very real. Having a hysterectomy for cancer is scary enough. Finding out later that you are cancer free is wonderful, except for the loss of your womb. It's not an easy situation to navigate.
If you chose to raise a child, they may not be yours biologically, but they would be yours in every other way there is... and anything you passed along to them would be very, very meaningful to them. Most adults I know who were adopted as young children, while they might have some interest in getting to know their birth parents, have an extremely strong bond with their *real* parents, who gave so much of themselves to ensure that they had a good upbringing.
If you find that you need someone to talk to about your feelings, do not hesitate to make an appointment with a counselor. She will be able to help you sort through your feelings and help you move forward. And perhaps one day soon you will be able to move forward and consider a little one to have as your very own or invest in the lives of other people in your community. You sound like you have a lot of love to give to others!
