After having my hysterectomy, one day it just hit me. How did I get the HPV virus which caused my stage 0 cervical cancer? Until then, I guess I've been in denial concerning the transmission of the virus. I've read and re-read the causes in books, booklets and websites. I've never slept with anyone other than my husband when I got married at 27. Now after two cone biopsis and hysterectomy, I am resentful of my husband. I feel that there is no other way that I got the virus but through him. At week two after surgery, I blew up at him. We had a confrontation where I told him to "come clean" with me, and he got mad and stormed out of the house. Is this normal to feel resentment and suspicious of my husband?
Genital human papillomavirus (also called HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection. According to the Center for Disease Control, there are more than 40 HPV types that can infect the genital areas of males and females. These HPV types can also infect the mouth and throat. Most people who become infected with HPV do not even know they have it.
A person can have HPV even if years have passed since he or she had sexual contact with an infected person. Most infected persons do not realize they are infected or that they are passing the virus on to a sex partner. It is also possible to get more than one type of HPV.
It is possible for someone to have HPV and infect someone years later without realizing they have the virus.
As for HPV and cervical cancer, Cervical cancer usually does not have symptoms until it is quite advanced. For this reason, it is important for women to get regular screening for cervical cancer through a pap smear.
It's important to take care of your health, getting the expert input from a GYN oncologist to make sure you receive all the treatments you need to get well.
It may, also, be a good idea to sit down with your husband, in a nonconfrontational time to discuss your questions and resentment. A diagnosis of HPV can leave both partners wondering about the faithfulness of the other. Be sure and keep the lines of communication open for a healthy resolution for you both!
